Sorry if posted already, but ran a quick search. Have been out all weekend with no real interwebz access.

Carla Williams hired as new AD at Virginia

Has been confirmed by UGA now.

Many believe that Carla has been at least to some degree one of the biggest hurdles to bringing in specific athletes in the past several years. I'm not sure one way or the other, but I can say that I'm happy to see a Dawg moving up to an AD position elsewhere, and if it means that a little bit of "the Georgia Way" negatives are crumbling away, I'll take it.

To which specific atheletes are you referring?

I'm curious as well, what were the gripes about Carla here at UGA?

Had genuinely never heard of the woman before now. Wish her the best.

Former players seem to be happy for her, if that makes a difference.

Here's the best I can find in the comments section, on the fly.

Carla is part of The Georgia Way, and has been a philosophical roadblock to the football team being able to make ground in B-M. More specifically, obstructing the modernization of our AD office's corporate mental game.

Why is there a problem with blocking problem kids who also are borderline when it comes to academics? The last thing we need to is go back to the Jan Kemp days of partial qualifiers and crib courses. It is a university after all and we're hardly struggling when it comes to recruiting and admitting high school football recruits. UGA's academic reputation should be a source of pride. I'm also not sure UGA fans have a clue what she is or isn't responsible for.

it was rumored she was the reason Gurley got a 4 game suspension and not 2.

Agree with this...lets not become Mississippi State in regards athletes and academics

Jan Kemp was more about exiting special admit athletes from remedial English and Math classes but the trail itself affected the way we did things for MANY years down the road and we got to the point where we were at a competative disadvantage in the 90's

A) I haven't directly stated that she is/isn't responsible for anything player wise... just calling it out as something that is oft discussed. Not accusing you of anything, just making sure that's clear.

I believe the last player that I remember it coming up in discussion for was EJ Price? Bo Scarborough was another that it seemed we ended up looking away from because it seemed unlikely to get him in (probably don't land him anyways, ultimately not a big deal)... Just a couple of players that I can recall off the top of my mind that we either "missed" on or stopped recruiting with many rumors that qualifying them would have been a problem. As to the "it's a university first" approach, that's a bit laughable. UGA is a strong academic program, but these athletes already aren't held to the standard of our general admission requirements... Setting meaningfully higher but yet still arbitrary admission standards than our peer programs is not in any way something to be "proud of".

B) She *was* directly responsible for our recruiting budget and approval of expenses. I believe most recently, she decided to veto budget approval for replacement of UGA's aging golf carts which are used during recruiting visits... I don't personally give a shite about the carts themselves, but the penny pinching mentality of our AD (department, not director in this case) is somewhat ridiculous... getting rid of one of those voices is a win in my book.

Not to mention, rumors (unsubstantiated, but echoed often enough by people that would know to have credibility) that she has led the charge to "fall on the sword" with regards to the NCAA (ie. Gurley Autographs) rather than fight the battle. You "me aculpa" secondary or lower violations... you shut up and plead the fifth with anything major... the NCAA has such limited power that it's been proven the most effective way of addressing things at this point. She's not the lone culprit, but again... weakening *that* voice within the program IMO is a benefit. Ideally, there's nothing to worry about on that front, but when there is, the last thing you want is a AD staff that is incapable of thinking it through sufficiently.

AD information is largely nothing more than unsubstantiated rumors anywhere, so you can only go based on what the general consensus may be in a lot of cases. I'll take this as a win IMO. Wish nothing but to best for her as a former Dawg herself... but happy to see her spreading her wings elsewhere.

And why would any school hire
Someone from our AD to take over their top job given our horrible track record the last 5 years?

This is good news. She's a title 9 SJW. She's the one who gameplans our awesome handling of NCAA enforcement issues. The "fall on your sword and beg for mercy" strategy that's worked wonders for us. While UNC, AU, Miami fight and get the book thrown at them....wait, no??

Haha... almost came and posted it, but it's just so Chip that it's not even funny.

"We're watching..."

Listen here Chip... UGA brought her in and continued to promote her. There may not be another Carla right now, even if we only look at her valuable attributes... that shouldn't mean that the university has to hire a minority of a minority to fill the role... Looking at our offensive/defensive analyst hires and acting like those should be women is ridiculous. If they are qualified, sure, but it's not like there is an absolute abundance of women with the football acumen to handle that gig... and the ones that have it, likely have other skills that may make them more qualified for other roles. This idea that there should be some kind of quota is ridiculous. Should they consider everyone for openings, absolutely... but simply promoting/hiring people because they are a minority rather than because they earned/deserve the gig is a disservice to everyone. /soapbox
