Let's see if he actually shows up though. He has a habit of canceling visits.

Could you imagine getting Isiah Johnson, Tony Grimes, James Williams, and David Daniel(already committed, likely safety and should move up the ranks) in the same class? And with Ringo, Burns, and Kimber only a year ahead of them?

That would be such a sick DB corps for the next 4 years.

Both points are true. Even if he were to commit publicly, nothing is set in stone until he actually moves in

I can't speak for dhuck but my reading of him invoking Saban is that successful coaches have sometimes let on guys with questionable character decisions and had it work out. Obviously plenty of times it doesn't work out. But I think he mentioned Saban as an example of someone who has gone this route and didn't always regret it.

Saban appears to have learned his lesson. Our two highest rated signees in the Class of 2018 and Class of 2019 had similar character concerns and neither is on our roster anymore. I'm sure that had a lot to do with why we removed ourselves from the Evans' recruitment months ago.

As far as Evans goes, no one really knows how this thing turns out... but I'll say this:

When is the last time that a recruit with THIS much drama surrounding them through the entire recruiting process actually paid off as a big time star? Genuine question, I'm sure it has happened and I'm just forgetting someone, but man this one has been pretty excessive.

If he comes to Athens, I trust Kirby and the staff to either get him on the right path or cut bait early if he's too much of a distraction. If he doesn't, I won't fault them at all as they have access to a lot more information than we do. All else being equal, if there is a similar caliber RB with less concerns, you probably cut bait, but the upside is so high if he can "get right", I understand the attempt to find a way.

Roquan had some drama.

Also, there's been alot of misuse of the phrase cut bait here and on the secrb lately and it drives me crazy.

Roquan had a pretty dramatic recruitment

That wasn't his doing though.

Yeah, as Porter mentioned, Roquan's drama was really only us sneaking him info after he committed that his coach was leaving for the NFL IIRC. As a "recruit" he was pretty drama free otherwise.

DRob is probably the most "high drama" recruit I remember for us, where we ended up getting him after transfer, and while he's definitely a talented athlete, certainly nowhere near as good as the drama that surrounded his recruitment.

As to the phrase, what definition do you prefer? Much like other things, it's definition and connotations have expanded over the years.

quote:

Fish or cut bait is a common English language colloquial expression, dating back to the 19th-century United States, that refers to division of complementary tasks. The use of this expression has expanded over time, sometimes including the ideas of swift decision-making (to act or not to act), and cautions against procrastination and/or indecisiveness.

The expression explores the merits of two options: "Fish", which refers to the act of fishing; or "cut bait", which refers to cutting up pieces of bait into small, usable portions. A more modern, alternative interpretation of "cut bait" is understood to mean cutting one's fishing line. The meaning of the expression can vary, depending on which interpretation of "cut bait" is intended.

The original version of the expression derives from the fishing industry, in which fishermen must literally decide who is to fish, and who is to cut the bait used for fishing. Both the task of fishing, and that of cutting the bait, were considered equally important to the goal of catching fish.

I've fought this on many fronts... literally/figuratively being one of my personal pet peeves...

With colloquialisms, on the other hand, I believe context matters... just because it's not the original, doesn't make it incorrect.

quote:

Colloquialism or colloquial language is the linguistic style used for casual communication. It is the most common functional style of speech, the idiom normally employed in conversation and other informal contexts.

Colloquialism is characterized by wide usage of interjections and other expressive devices; it makes use of non-specialist terminology, and has a rapidly changing lexicon. It can also be distinguished by its usage of formulations with incomplete logical and syntactic ordering

In this scenario, do you have a proposed alternative that conveys the same message, or are you just old man griping? Either is acceptable.

Neither he nor Roquan had character issues that seem to be associated with Evans.

That's fair, was just referring to recruiting drama in general.

To also be fair to Evans, the exact details of these "character concerns" are not exactly available. We know he's had disagreements with his coach(es)... Beyond that, there is wild internet speculation that goes from verbal to physical "incident" to "he punched a coach"...

I'm not up to speed, is this the final 247 recruiting rankings for the 2020 cycle? Right now it has us at #2, but, I feel like if we sign Evans that could put us at #1.

Also, when is the last day a player has to commit to a school?
