So if you redshirt 25 freshmen every year, have 85 total on scholarship

That's irrelevant. Redshirts used to give 0 games. Now they give 4.

The only point in referencing redshirts is that you can compile 5 years recruiting classes to make your 85 man roster. If I redshirted in 2016, I'm part of a 5th class making up the 85 man roster and I am available for every game that I am healthy.

Obviously nobody does that

Agreed

point is that a redshirt has a similar effect to other forms of attrition, player can't be a contributor for most of the season

Again. Irrelevant. You dont claim the redshirt until a season is over. Right now, no one from the 2020 class is a redshirt. Next January 2021, we can reevaluate who can take advantage. But if they were needed... they were absolutely available. And as I said, a redshirt from 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 has no limitation on their 2020 playing time.

quote:

Add in attrition from transfers, medical, early NFL departures and it still is problematic.

This has always been the case. Now there is a transfer portal making communication easier to facilitate a player moving on. But UGA has lost QBs to transfers in the 90s and 2000s. We have lost safeties. We have lost running backs. This isnt new.

We'll have to disagree. Redshirts are similar to attrition in terms of impact on depth. It limits how many of the roster can contribute. If they're needed and forced to play in more than 4 games, then they're not a redshirt and thus irrelevant to your point. Redshirting does not meaningfully improve the ability of a team to recover from attrition because every player who actually redshirts misses most of the season, but they still count against the 85 limit. Only changes to the 25 signing rule can offset excessive attrition (or some rollback of other changes, and that seems unlikely), which is why it's being considered.

The transfer portal is new. The graduate transfer rule (immediately eligible) is relatively new I believe. And the hard 25 signing limit is new. And it seems like more players have declared early for the NFL in recent years (could be wrong, that's just speculation on my part). That combination is causing problems.

McConkey is a UT fan and so is his family. Recent history suggests that we should avoid recruits in that situation.

Maybe Kirby should work on flipping 5 star WR Rakim Jarrett. He would have a DC buddy and teammate coming in (Sherman). Ultimate package deal.

Kirby and company need to get down here to Roanoke, AL to see this kid. He’s a beast! Saban is visiting him right now. My oldest daughter is a freshman there, she just text me said Saban walked right by her. I asked her did she tell him GO DAWGS? She said no, I was disappointed.

those routes mcconkey ran in the link were way too complex for last year's team to try

You can't flip somebody that has already signed.

I'm sure anything's possible...maybe some behind the scenes action to get Maryland to release him.

In any case, after he realizes he wasted his 5 stars on Maryland, we need to get some transfer portal action going for him in 2021...

Jarrett and his Mom fell for the do it for your city angle. He won’t be the last from the area that Locksley picks up.

Tennessee hasn't offered him yet and apparently Chaney was the only one to come visit him, and only for about 30 minutes.

I expect Tennessee to offer this weekend but it helps being his first power 5 scholarship.

I think in the Dawgnation piece he even said he was tempted to commit on the spot, so we'll have to see what happens.

For what it's worth, Vandagriff comes from an Auburn and Tennessee family.
