The luster of playing in "the dome" is gone. I remember back in the late 80s when my alma mater hosted some state championship games... the electricity around the area was just off the charts. Now it's just all about being on TV I gue$$. Shame.

I didn’t get to go to GSU last year. Everybody I talked to that went said the stadium was very good but the weather sucked.

I loved the Dome and what Blank did to the GHSA with the Benz was Mr. Potters levels of assholery.

I’ll be at some games this year, but I agree I don’t expect the same atmosphere that was in the Dome.

One thing I will say for keeping all the games in one place is it’s nice for everyone in the state to be able to watch all the state title games. That one year they moved it to home fields they all played at the same time. So you could only watch one on TV (7A of course) and then you had to have an NFHS subscription to watch any others. Being able to watch them all on GPB is great.

Love the Twitter comments. Ain't a damn one of them ever seen the HS rulebook, let alone taken the rules test and refereed a HS football game.

Look, I'm not saying they weren't cheap shots and dirty plays. But the referees have specific guidelines they have to follow to eject a player. It doesn't matter how dirty you think a player is, you have to follow the protocols to eject him.

Thomas Co. hosted 5 state championship games from 1992-1997 and won all of them. That's what high school football is all about. The GHSA only cares about the dollar.

How in the world did the get to host 5 straight state championship games? Absurd and its as good a reason as any the games should be at MCB or GSU's stadium.

It wasn’t 5 straight. It was 92, 93, 94, 96 & 97. The 1990 AAA state championship was the reason I believe Central got so many home title games.

In 1990, Worth Co. had lost to Cairo during the regular season but, both came to the state title game from the opposite bracket. Worth was on the side of the bracket that got home field for state that year, it simply rotated each year. Cairo complained, rightly, about having to come to Sylvester to play after beating Worth Co. during the season. So, they whipped our arse in the title game, too. Dammit.

After that I believe W-L record, head to head, etc. started being taken into account.

The most awesome state title game I ever attended was in Thomasville in 1993 when Thomasville & Central Thomasville played each other for the AAA state title. That town was LIT. If you don’t think something like that means a lot to a small south GA town? Won’t ever get to be a part of something like that again. sigh

While agree it's also about not giving one team a home field advantage.

It’s given if the two teams are the same seed. One gets home field advantage for all the marbles over a coin flip (based on how home field in the playoffs is currently determined)

The only sports in America that give home field to one team in a championship setting are series’ where both teams are guaranteed multiple home games. For one-game championships, neutral sites are the right way to do it. Period. Silly to give a major advantage to a team over a coin flip.

Well, it’s a moot point these days. It’s all in Atlanta and it ain’t going anywhere.

So, now, the Atlanta area teams get an advantage every year. They’re able to play close to home, easy for their fans to travel to be there in person. While schools like Cairo, Bainbridge, Colquitt, Lowndes, etc. never get to play a state championship game near their homes anymore. The majority of local fans can’t afford to attend in Atlanta. And TV isn’t a substitute for being there, it just isn’t.

I know my side of the argument has lost. Doesn’t take away the bitterness from it though.

This isnt texas or california.
"Near" is always a relative term.
It isnt that bad. I dont hear bitching about state basketball finals, state softball finals, or state track finals always in the same venues.

And do you think the other team with the same seed didn’t earn it as well?

Fitzgerald is where I grew up and has been a competitive program at 2A for what feels like two decades can finally get over the hump If they beat Calloway and Irwin is looking to repeat after going undefeated last year and having their coach pass away from cancer after the season. Would be nice to see border rivals Fitz and Ocilla win in the same year.

Both programs are desperate for a title and I’d be happy to see either win it. Of course, in 2A, I was pulling for Rabun, but Fitzgerald and Callaway have been in the same boat as programs that are always there but just haven’t won it.

Kinda like a couple of teams I root for...

I would like to see Fitzgerald win it but Callaway’s got to be heavily favored after what they did to T’ville and Rabun.

Looking forward to seeing our Wolverines play for State
We will be there but weather is not looking promising.
So cold and rainy.

We feel pretty good as Trinity lost to both ELCA and Athens Academy and Prince beat both teams by a combined 79-7
But got to play the game and hope they finish.
Brocks last stand before he is off to UGA next week.
This team is playing its best ball right now.

We came up short by one game in Softball but hopefully football can finish...

Go Wolverines !
