Yeah but how many teams lost an entire recruiting class within the span of a month?
The portal just makes the movement quick and easy in a sport that’s already accustomed to quick departures from a school. Players don’t just leave a good situation because the portal makes it possible to do so. They leave because they feel the situation they’re in isn’t setting them up for success. Keep in mind we’ve just lost two of our primary starters and best players, not like they weren’t getting plenty of PT.

florida lost like 6 dudes. UNC lost a 5* center. I'm sure you could look at literally hundreds of teams that lost starters. I already acknowledged it will hurt us more than it will hurt others just because of the type of program we are. But let's not act like this is an exclusive issue to crean and uga basketball. It's happened to our football program too and will continue to happen. The portal is the biggest sham in decades as it relates to "amateur" athletics.

uhh...yeah they do.

right, and prior to the portal they would stick it out. Do you really think in the motherfricking dennis felton era that we wouldn't see just as much of a mass exodus? Or Fox? If the portal existed during the early felton tenure we legit might not be able to field a team of 5 scholarship players.

So, how do you adjust to this?
Crean has said that he is embracing this new system.
Do you recruit the best high schoolers from the state only and portal transfers from anywhere?
Keep recruiting as you have, knowing that at least half of that class, if not a majority, won't be there in two years?
This new transfer rule, IMO, will absolutely kill any chance for programs like UGA from ever being relevant because you can never build a program this way.
I've held out for years for UGA being relevant in basketball. Now, I don't see how it will ever happen.
I've decided to move on. Good luck to them, but they will never be worth my time again.

So Florida players hate Mike White just as much as their fans. Having an a-hole HC isn’t exclusive to any one team. As for Kessler, leaving just before Williams announces his retirement seems like a pretty strong correlation.
The portal has just brought to the surface what has always happened in college Athletics which are guys shopping around opportunities through their parents and HS coaches. Now we just get to see the sausage made in real time and we have to confront the longstanding fact that a lot (not all but a lot) of recruits and players don’t exactly love our school the same way we as fans do.

Perhaps. But we were also a much better program under Fox than we are now and the Felton era was a different generation pre-Social Media. It’s not THAT cut and dry.
Meanwhile, for every program losing guys there are programs gaining guys (or seeing little to no movement at all). I’m not going to stand here and piss all over the portal when it’s potentially going to save our football season from two freshmen corners and an OLB playing Star. Learn to balance the losses with the gains.

I guess the players can finally do what the coaches have been doing. Coaches can’t say shite here...

This new fella came in and completely trashed everything we had accomplished.. told us we didn't do anything, we weren't good enough to play SEC basketball.. looking real funny in the light.

I figure Wheeler goes to Houston not the NBA. Go home qnd play for a final 4 team? Sounds like a no brainer

Crean has gotta go. The longer he stays, the worse it'll get. I have no idea who to replace him with though. Maybe Jonas Hayes? I'm not sure who would want to come clean up this mess, especially with boosters and fans who don't really care all that much.
I'm still not sure what he has done so bad that all of these guys want out.

My impression after the last few days isn’t that he did or does something particularly awful or mean spirited to the players. Rather, he’s an arrogant arse who recruits well on the basis that players will develop and see results but after the past couple of years, the players aren’t seeing those promises met and they have no incentive to stick around and play for an unlikable person in a system he can’t apparently teach as well as he says he can. Players tried to ask for a change, administration didn’t want to fork out $7 mill in buyout money on top of whatever it costs for a new coach and staff, so the players walked.

You could attract more folks than you would think for Creans salary I bet.

Oh I agree with that. $3M/year will have some suitors. They would be in position to demand at least 5 years though because the program is so deep in the shitter right now.
I'm honestly not even sure who would be an ideal up and coming guy though. I don't want a retread, but someone who has shown sustained success at a smaller program, and not like Fox who has never gotten past the first weekend in his entire coaching career.

Joe Holding would be my pick. He eventually built up the Abiliene Christians program. If you watched them in the tourney they were an obviously well coached team. Only issue is that UTEP just hired him away from ACU.
Archie Miller would be a good choice too. He needs to rebuild his brand after Indiana

Would be tough to sell the fans on another failed Indiana coach

UGA adds JUCO AA Dalen Ridgnal. Don’t know much about him but it sure seems like he can score.
