We romanticize the past. Every former student has said that. If it were true the 12th Man would be mute by now.
We're not mute, but we're not loud, either. I know "old army" is always down on "new army", but I'm not one to wax poetic about "the good ole days". Maybe we aren't as loud now because our defense looks nothing like the Wrecking Crew, but only cause, not the effect, is really in question, imo.

But what makes 'em loud? Great defense, right? Chief will bring that shite back.

Its not new army that sits on their asses in the Zone and West side.

True, but have the former student sections EVER been loud? The couple of times I've sat close to the students on the East side, it hasn't seemed loud at all.
I hope I'm wrong. I hope that the reason the volume in Kyle is turned down is the result of too many Snyder-ish defenses.

We really aren't as loud. I'm not that old and I'm a cynic more than I am a romantic, so I'd love to cynically claim that we're just exaggerating how loud we used to be out of a kind of bias for the past, but we're just really not as loud as we used to be.
The last time we were as loud as we were during the '80s and '90s was 2010 Nebraska.
I think the reason is:
1) First and foremost, far and away: defense. Good defense creates a loud crowd when the crowd has the potential to be loud in the first place. So no potential (UTw for example) and it'll never happen even with a good defense, but give a good crowd a stout defense and they feed off of each other. There's a feedback pattern for sure. It's just impossible to be loud when your defense slowly bleeds to death EVERY DRIVE.
2) The greying of the west side an dlower Zone. Folks over there who bought tickets in their 30s and 40s are now 60, 70+. They have the seats and they're holding onto them and people that age just don't have the vigor of younger folks. So a lot of the stadium ain't contributing anymore.

It got really loud last year during the Rice blocked punt. Like almost make me sick loud.
We now have the potential, we just have to be close in a big game at home to live up to that potential.

Our loudness factor changed practically overnight after the tragedy and subsequent banning of the on-campus event.
(The reasons behind that aren't a discussion anyone [including me] wants to have)
I think an entirely enclosed Kyle Field is going to be deafening.

I agree with you.
As usual

Hell yes to the dancers.
I dislike the corps block too. It wasn't there when I was there, and it was cool to be next to a CT. they were just an average student like anyone else.

I agree completely. When there isn't a good defense on the field it is hard to sustain a good crowd noise. Some of the current students haven't seen the defenses of the past. I believe Chavis will bring a swagger back to the wrecking crew. Might not be a top defense this year but it will be better. Better have good corners and be able to put pressure on with the front 4 otherwise 3rd downs will drive you crazy.

I've been reading about corps block for a long time and wondered what the big deal was. In fact as I started reading this thread and saw Shane's comment that no one supports it and it's the only issue we all agree on, I thought "I do support it and I don't agree."
However, I thought the reference was to the band. This thread has opened my eyes to an entirely different picture. I had no idea something new was started in '96. I feel stupid asking, but do all members of the corps now sit together as one block? The answer seems to be an obvious "yes," but that is such a ridiculous idea I feel I must be missing something (and I support and have great respect for the corps).

The Corps Block was an idea that was pitched by Malon Sutherland, the Vice President of Student Affairs, as an idea to get the Corps "out in front" as we were transitioning from the SWC to the Big 12. Lt. Gen. Darling, the Commandant of Cadets until Spring 1996, opposed the idea and blocked it at every turn.
When MajGen Hopgood took over as Commandant, he wanted to "make the Corps more like the academies", outlawing and changing traditions to include, but not limited to:
-Drastically and fundamentally changing March to the Brazos (we didn't even go all the way to the Brazos in April 1997)
-Outlawing the practice of making freshmen run on the quad
-Forcing upperclassmen to allow freshmen to "cut the quad"
What amounted to the actions of a scant few individuals (Cadets leaving march-in and either not going to the games or changing into civilian clothes to go to the games) was interpreted as a systemic widespread problem, so he saw Corps Block as an opportunity to keep accountability of cadets and force them to attend the games.
Granted, there were a few changes incorrectly attributed to Hopgood to include:
-Disbanding of the Fish Drill Team. The events in fall 1996 were a lawsuit waiting to happen. He really had no choice.
-Ending of "Flight of the Great Pumpkin". This was the Professor of Naval Science, not the Commandant. He basically told all the seniors in C2 that he would revoke their commissions if they participated. They did so anyway.
-PMC getting the outhouse on the 1996 Bonfire. Let's just say that a BQ zip chopping up the Redpots' log is not going to go over well.

Dance Team might as well be there, it's 2015 FFS and they don't distract people from the actual game, just serves a purpose during the down time in between / commercials / something to look at an avoid the ads of the spirit killer.
As far as the Corps Block, my family started getting season tickets around the same time as that decision was made and so I pretty much grew up believing that to be the norm and "tradition" but I really don't care about it either way...maybe let the Corps decide its future? I don't have a dog in that fight.

Yes to the dancing girls as long as 1) they never interfere with anything real and 2) they look better than anyone else's bitches.
Yes to killing the Corps Block UNLESS we could get like 20,000 students into The Corps. The only prob with it is that it's too small. More Corps Block.

It got REALLY LOUD during Jackie Sherrill's tenure. I recall my dad's (class of '65) later saying, "...at least he reminded us how important it is to yell." This after said Coach's resignation. This after SMU died.
If you weren't there then you just weren't there. It's not anyone's fault when he wasn't born.
My dad is/was an historian. He holds an inkling as to what noise meant back in 1917 and/or 1922 and/or 1941. He wasn't mincing words when he said what he did. Ergo I remember them. As it were. And amen.
Regarding the differences in sound I've personally noted from 1980 to 1990 and then from then to AD 2000 and then from then to now (and all that)... I'm thinking that from Emory Bellard to Jackie Sherril there was some muffle. Nothing since hath been worth noting.
We are loud.
We must strive to remain loud; we must strive to become louder. We must strive to remain louder...
