Apparently our game withUtah was very "even".

They're a very well rounded and experienced team. They have 3 senior guards, an NBA center, a sophomore forward who was a top 100 recruit and shot like 45% from 3 off the bench last year.

Remember guys, it's Kennedy. Don't get your hopes too high because he'll find a way to let us down.

Ah Pat. The one guy left who thinks Kennedy is a good coach (or a very committed troll).

For the record, I think we'll have a pretty good season. Last year we had a bubble NCAA team and this season we return the whole thing minus Roberson and add four guys who seem ready to play at the college level.

As a foreword to my post, because this board is fairly small, I like to act civil. So I'm genuinely not trying to be a rude dick. But what can you possibly like about him. He's a good but hardly outstanding defensive coach and an abominable offensive coach; truly one of the worst in the NCAA. If he doesn't have a guy that can consistently dominate (not win, but dominate) iso match-ups, we do nothing on offense. Just assume poor spacing, make bad passes around the perimeter, and jack a shot toward the end of the shot clock. And I'm really not exaggerating. The years that we didn't have Elston and House (and the few games without House last year), we had one of the lowest offensive efficiency ratings in D-I basketball (among schools that counted anyway i.e. not East-West College of Law and Cosmetology). That's a dispassionate fact.

I'm happy to admit that he's on a nice recruiting tear here, but that was a coaching staff team effort, a really unusual domino effect (Stansbury -> House -> THE CLASS), and a good bit of right place at the right time (4 highly talented guys wanting to play together + being willing to go to a smaller name basketball school). It's not something that'll probably continue, though supposedly Stansbury could sell pork to a Jewish man.

But I am genuinely curious why you like him a lot.

I saw this on Texags. Jon rothstein, CBS college basketball guy, was looking at the team

Greetings from College Station. Here for Texas A&M practice. Aggies look like a Top-25 team. #collegehoopstoday

The guy in College Station that's turning heads? Texas A & M freshman D.J. Hogg. 6-8 & skilled with DEEP range. Talented. #collegehoopstoday

Refreshing to watch Texas A & M freshman Tyler Davis. A center who knows he's a center. Comfortable in his own skin. #collegehoopstoday

Alex Caruso is at the top of my "least appreciated" list. Always has a "swiss army knife" effect on the box score. #collegehoopstoday

Texas A & M is the SEC's version of Noah's Ark -- Aggies have two of everything. Chemistry the biggest key for Aggies. #collegehoopstoday

Early prediction on Texas A & M starting five: Anthony Collins, Alex Caruso, Danuel House, Jalen Jones, Tyler Davis. #collegehoopstoday

More intrigued with the SEC than I've been in an awfully long time. League has one anchor & several really good teams. #collegehoopstoday

He's been playing offense that way bc we haven't had good scorers, and he'd attempted to limit possessions. Think LSU or muschamp Florida.

His teams at MSU had scorers and shooters all over the court, AND played great defense.

He's also been essentially playing without a center.

The roster has been bad. No depth, and huge holes even in the starting lineup.

From the same CBS reporter: Texas A&M's D.J. Hogg is best freshman nobody knows

quote:

Texas A & M made national headlines last fall thanks to a recruiting class that featured four Top-100 recruits highlighted by a bonafide center in Tyler Davis. But the biggest gem in the recruiting class that changed Billy Kennedy's tenure in College Station may wind up being 6-foot-8 wing D.J. Hogg. The Texas native can play both forward spots and has the type of deep range and accuracy that would make J.J. Redick envious.

The Aggies are expected to be one of the better teams in the SEC this season because of the addition of Davis and the presence of veterans like Alex Caruso and Danuel House. But don't discount Hogg's ability. If Kennedy wants to use him as a stretch four, he can. If he wants to go big with Caruso and House in the back court and Hogg at small forward he can do that too. After watching practice in College Station on Wednesday one thing is for certain: Hogg is going to be a piece of Texas A & M's puzzle in 15-16.
