Honestly, 4-3 right now is better than I thought they’d be after watching about half of their game vs Hawaii. Haven’t seen one since, but thought they’d be 2-4 or so at this point.
Not saying he’s doing a good job or anything, I’m just surprised when I looked up their record.

Arizona state getting smoked by 2-5 UCLA, don’t be so sure of their finish. But if he does miss a bowl for the second year in a row, you gotta think his days are limited. Maybe one more season and then they would fire him?

Yates had a bad D under Rich Rod at Arizona too. It was kind of surprising that Sumlin kept him on in the first place.

I like to bash Sumlin as much as the next guy, but this is Arizona were talking about.
For all we know, Sumlin wasn't given a good budget to hire coordinators. So sticking it out with Yates probably made the most sense at the time. You're not going to get anyone worth a dick for $600k/year. May as well save the buyout money in year 1 and make a decent hire this off-season now that Yates contract has ended. I wouldn't be surprised if Arizona gives him a budget to get a decent G5 coordinator.

Because Sumlin was the highest paid coach in college football last year (us paying his buyout plus Arizona salary) and this year both Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray are starting games in the NFL. You know, the two guys he managed to run off from our program within a week of each other.
I get some people don’t want to hear about him anymore and that’s fine, feel free to not click on threads about him, but I also understand the guys that wish nothing but failure on him. He played his leaving for the NFL and USC cards to trap us into paying out the nose for a big salary and bigger buyout, when it turns out he was nothing but fools gold. Doesn’t help that he had a smart arse attitude the whole time he was here, you can do that when you’re Nick Saban or bill belick and win lots of games, not when you go 8-5 every season.
