Query.

Why do so many people insist upon pairing A&M with OU in the assorted “permanent rivals” discussions, as if there is some long history with them?

We shared a conference with them for a mere decade and a half. To be honest, they mean absolutely nothing to me.

Thoughts?

It is baffling. the folks over at TA are saying they have heard from insiders that it is most likely LSU, MSSt and tu.

Probably because we were both in the big 12 and nobody realizes that the big 12 hasnt been around very long and we didnt play them much before that. They just arent doing the homework and figure we would be back to playing some sort of old rival.

If it is 4 team pods i'd take: tu, arky, and either lsu or one of the mississippi schools. Pass on ou and mizzou even though we have history with them.

Don't have to worry about pods. Sounds like it will be 3&6 with tx, lsu & msu. Wish it could be arkie instead of msu, not sure when we became rivals with msu.

If we have to get three opponents, then it better be Texas, LSU, and Arkie.

Mainly because OU has nothing going rivalry-wise in the expanded SEC once you get past Texas. OU doesn't have a 2nd rival, much less a third to play every year.

Plus all of our "rivalries" have other teams that could fill the gap if you take us out of the equation. Texas is the only one without a comparable substitute for us, but LSU could find a 3rd school and Arkansas probably could too.

I think that's why we get paired with OU in a lot of these hypothetical.

Seems like there is also a lot of momentum for the 1+7 model, which would just be awful from a competition standpoint. But since everything is about more money and more power for the guys in the fancy suits, it will probably win out.

I actually prefer the 1&7 approach. But that is not happening.

The networks want more product. So they get an extra conference game that way. They also keep some annual rivalries that matter. BAMA/Auburn, Auburn/Georgia, Florida/Georgia, BAMA/Tennessee, texas/OU, A&M/texas,A&M/LSU, texas/Arkansa,LSU/Ole Miss, egg bowl etc... nobody cares about Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, MSU or Missouri - so you have a lot of ways to fill in that 3rd game or make sure everyone gets one permanent that isn't brutal.

Not sure why you say that it's not happening. The blurbs I've read make it sound like there are plenty of schools pushing to keep it at 8.

Maybe you are right, but I would be shocked. Happy, but shocked. The less powerful schools want 1&7, and there is more $ with the extra game. I just can't see Kentucky, South Carolina, Vandy, Missouri and the Mississippi schools getting what they want. But I don't really know anything, just guessing.

If that happens I want Pig as an OOC game. Would be stupid for us to not play them every year.

There's actually less games available for TV and for ticket sales if they go from 8 to 9 conference games. Think it's 8 less, but spread out over 13-14 weeks, and with 2 new teams' worth of inventory to play with, I'd hope it's not a big enough issue to force us into an inferior model.
