In general, it seemed like Mazzone had us prepared for the game but made bad play calling decisions in a few critical areas. Our offense is better, but not sure how much I love Mazzone. I'm willing to give him time though not saying I'm rushing to judgment.

I liked our preparation, thought the offense was good at times but stagnant for a good majority of the game. Thought we performed best when we were running tempo. Loved the run game, the sweeps, etc.

Thought blocking was pretty good all things considered.

Defense was what I expected no discussion really needed.

Run game was a plus. O-line needs time to come together. Tough test against UCLA -

I wonder how much Mazzone had to change up play calling to give different looks for his previous employer.

Either way, I'll take it.

Pretty much how I feel. I think the offense could have done much better if not for crappy play-calling. But I think this will improve. We'll see. I was glad to see Keith Ford and The Fish with multiple big plays.

Trevor has a strange throwing motion... anybody else notice that? He did well, it just stuck out at me.

The defense was lights out aside from a couple of plays. Really pleased with their performance.

Game changed after Keith Ford limped off the field.

It was nice to see him as the diversion on the final play. That is coaching.

Yeah he throws sideways when he's on the run. And he likes to throw on the run

I was pleasantly surprised with the run game and the line at times.

However, im pretty discouraged by Trevor Knight as a qb. First game and all so no overreaction, but he worries me moving forward.

Defense looked aces in spots, and minus that one td they gave up at the end of the game I was close to full bone for the season.

I can't recall hearing daylon mack's name once. Thought that was strange.

Overall, happy to escape wit a win, and preparing for a long season offensively.

Mack got playtime. Quite a bit. They just weren't running his direction often.

I think our OL did an ok job, Trevor just played like a guy with everything on the line

And it was, he'll loosen up

I thought the OL was very good run blocking considering what I expected. McCoy and Prater have bright futures. Play calling late in the game was extremely frustrating

But let's be real, knight was playing with a puckered arse all night. You cannot fault Mazzone for looking at 4 minutes and saying "shite WE'VE GOT THE LEAD, LETS NOT TIRN IT OVER!!!"

I don't really think he did that though. We started throwing the ball early in the series for some reason when we were running well. We also seemed to stop high percentage throws to Kirk that would have made sense in those situations. I don't know how much of that is Knight with play options or if UCLA moved up on the receivers but still

Run game was better than expected, but we are clearly hamstrung by QB play and poor situational coaching.

PhilipMarlowe: Mack was getting some good pressure and was in Rosen's face a couple of times. Rosen managed to avoid it.

He's got some really bad habits and unfortunately I don't think it's going to change. Many of the mistakes he made yesterday were the things that got him benched at OU. He's been around the block and if he was going to fix them, it probably would have been by now.

Great kid and he'll give it his all on every play. But I'll be a little surprised if he doesn't lose us a game at some point this season (though to be fair, he's also capable of winning one a la Bama in the Sugar Bowl)

technically it was world's better than the last few years but that's grading on a significant curve. It was awful at times too.

Mazzone schemed around having a terrible Oline and it showed. Lot of short throws, misdirection, waggles, etc. We really ran very little intermediate/deep stuff. But that masked how bad the Oline was at times.

But it is what it is. So many young guys, it'll improve as the season goes on. Prater looks like a steal.

This is exactly what I hoped he would bring to the table that Spav lacked, the ability to coach around deficiencies

It worries me that our offense looked totally inept during the 4 quarter when we needed just one more score and to run some time off to seal the game. Really need better play calling in those situations.

Knight made some really impressive throws, and would follow it up with some head scratchers. He needs to learn to step up in the pocket instead of just running backpedaling or scrambling at the first sign of pressure. Agree with the comment that he will likely lose us a game at some point, but also has he potential to win us one against a really good team if he plays to his full potential.

Run game looked solid but I want to wait and see how it looks against more competition before declaring it a strong point for us. I liked our commitment to it, and was very pleased to see a play or two from under center.

All in all, they did well enough to win, but we've got plenty of stuff to work on.
