Is he some kinda savant?

I was strongly impacted by his interview on the SEC network after the Vandy game. They thought it was his first time coaching in that odd venue, but they were mistaken. He had coached there twice, like a decade earlier, and he remembered the exact score of both games and exactly how they finished down the stretch. That’s just amazing to me.

That kind of memory, plus his odd mannerisms and crazy memory for stats. His wide reading and doing his own contracts. He’s just a crazy remarkable guy.

No point to this thread, except to say that he really seems like a rare gem. Not just a great coach, but a really remarkable mind.

I think he's very intentional about everything he does, and he knows he's going to be interviewed and asked about all sorts of things so he comes prepared. He probably had those games on his mind before the interview from preparing his team to play there, but you're right that it was very impressive to see his ability to engage the questioner and recall those specific details.

And I agree that he seems to be the complete package. The knock on him a while back was that his rosters neglected the front court some times, but the game has evolved to match his approach perfectly. And he really seems to connect with players and others involved in the game on a personal level.

I am really excited about the direction we’re headed in basketball. Even our team this year is entertaining to watch just because of the effort level. Just seeing how we’ve improved from game 1 to now, and how we’ve stayed in games with opponents with vastly superior talent level at the moment, is very encouraging

That's right - I forgot to say that he remembered the exact date of each game. And the way he was looking off like he was accessing a brain file. It really did strike me as savant-like. (I don't mean that as an insult.)

I wanted to go to a game to watch his antics. He didn't disappoint. The first half, I was amazed at how he kept his energy up. This was the game that he didn't let the team leave the court during halftime. He said "It is 56(?) steps to our locker room. I kept them on the court because I thought we could use those 112(?) steps to get better in the second half."

It worked. I forgot about watching him in the second half and was impressed with the effort of the team.

Believe it or not, kids with ADHD who get properly medicated turn out to be EXACTLY like Buzz Williams.

I would bet he takes prescription meds for it.

That recall of those particular games reminds me of some of the stuff Jimbo has said before. There have been stories about him going over playcall and defense he faced 2 decades ago like it was yesterday. Buzz is a different cat, but it’s probably more common than we know for coaches to remember crazy stuff like that.

The more I've gotten to know about Buzz, the more I'm intrigued by the guy. Very unique individual. I like him as our HC.

That is exactly my thought. He is like a life coach turned ball coach. He seems like the kind of guy that reads and researches constantly. He is like a Renaissance Man.
