Okay. I did some digging. Here are significant increases in recruit rank among the composite top 10 classes. (the biggest number of spots increased per recruit)
1. 1047 - David Gbenda - t.u.
2. 1022 - Isaiah Hookfin - t.u.
3. 775 - Tyler Owens - t.u.
4. 702 - Marcus Alexander - OU
5. 646 - Greg Williams - Clemson
6. 561 - Myzon Warren - t.u.
7. 542 - John Metchie - Alabama
8. 475 - Rian Davis - Georgia (t.u. interest)
9. 471 - Mykye Tongue - Georgia (t.u. interest)
10. 460 - Zion Logue - Georgia
11. 437 - Bryton Constantin - Clemson
12. 424 - John Battle - Alabama
To be fair, we had a few increases:
431 - Baylor Cupp
653 - Zach Calzada
453 - Jaylen Wydermyer
502 - Tarian Lee Jr.
But we also had some pretty big down-grades.

made a half-arse effort to find another example of this happening at other programs. I haven't found anything yet, but I will do a little more research and report back. So far, it doesn't seem to happen at the other programs in with current top 10 classes.
Thanks for the legwork. That's some wild shite.

Where did all those top 10 classes get them before? Overrated ends up getting them a bunch of Breckyn Hagars.
I get what you’re saying, but Hager was a low level 3 star. Using someone like Tyrone Swoopes is probably a better example.

Saw a link to this today and thought y’all might be interested. Really is funny how they don’t even try and hide the bias. As I said earlier doesn’t bother me too much as it will just cause inflated expectations that their not really good players won’t be able to achieve, but still…

And, Bobby Burton got those sips just barely ahead of Aggy.
Team Rankings
Wow.
Brilliant work.
Little brother shite, right there.

Any chance we pass them with NSD coming up?

Don’t care. Top OL, DL, and TE in the country, along with a S who should be top 30 in the country. This is a great class even if they had us ranked 20th. These kids are going to come in and contribute really quickly, this is a better class than last year. Jimbo has us on the right track

I agree completely. Just think it would be hilarious if all the finagling (sp?) didn't end up doing what they wanted.

The only effect all this has on anything is that it puts Texas coaches in the position of having to try and overachieve with what they have on the field to make things look decent vs what they have on paper.

The effect it has is that they can sell something besides on field success, and it gives all the networks one more reason to keep talking about them.

This. This is the problem.
In today's recruit-hype driven college football culture, they have the unique ability to overinflate their prospects and thus lure higher quality talent than would otherwise be interested based upon results.
Can basically turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

They won 10 games (including 2 Top 10 wins), made the conference title game, and played in a major bowl where they embarrassed the #2 SEC team. A recruiting ranking of #3 or #7 is pretty irrelevant compared to all those other things.

I agree somewhat. They did have a great season, especially compared to where they have been in the past.
However, I think it's built out of popsicle sticks, since the average level of competition was pretty poor, and this recruiting class doesn't fill a lot of the wholes they have going forward.

Yeah I think they were a little overrated (at least if you compare their poll rankings to computer rankings), and I'd take our class over theirs no matter the final 247 rankings. I expect them to be good in the near future and to continue recruiting well, and maybe they won't, but I don't think the sites manipulating the rankings will have any affect one way or the other.
