The number next to incomers is their 247 recruit rating.

QUARTERBACKS

Who's gone: Kenny Hill (transferred to TCU)
Who's back: #10 Kyle Allen (6-3, 210, SO), #14 Conner McQueen (5-10, 175, JR)
Who's new: #1 Kyler Murray 98 (5-11, 185, FR), #7 Jake Hubenak 70 (6-3, 195, SO)

The QB position hasn't really been a weakness for A&M in quite a while but last year, as Kenny Hill struggled with off-the-field issues, what has long been a strength became a real question mark. Kyle Allen took over and while far from perfect, showed that the QB situation appears that it should be in good hands again going forward. Kyler Murray enters the picture coming off 3 straight Texas HS titles and undefeated as a HS QB. It's not hyperbole to say he has the greatest HS resume in Texas history. Expect the two to battle it out to see who leads the team this year, but smart money would be on Allen who has a year in the system (including two full springs) as well as 5 starts. Whoever wins the job, it would be pretty surprising for this not to be an upgrade from the up and down performance last year. Jake Hubenak comes aboard after a redshirt year at OSU followed by a year at Blinn and joins Connor McQueen, of the clan McQueen, as camp arms.

RUNNING BACKS

Who's gone: Trey Williams (declared for NFL)
Who's back: #5 Tra Carson (6-0, 240, SR), #21 Brandon Williams (6-0, 205, SR), #20 James White (6-0, 220, SO)
Who's new: #29 Jay Bradford 91 (5-11,196, FR), #25 Kendall Bussey 87 (5-9, 200, FR), #21 Keith Ford 97 (5-11, 215, JR-TR)

With Trey Williams gone to the NFL and Brandon Williams starting off primarily at DB, Tra Carson becomes the de facto man out of last year's 3-man rotation. Carson missed the spring however and James White received rave reviews for his punishing running style as well as his blocking. These two will probably be the primary RBs this year in what the staff wants to be a more physical running attack. Incoming freshmen Kendall Bussey is coming off a knee injury so it's unclear if he'll be ready for this season and Jay Bradford may have to sit the season out for medical reasons. So it's likely Brandon Williams will remain an emergency RB as walk-on Dolezal officially gets 3rd team reps. Keith Ford is a former 5-star that transferred in from OU. He will not be eligible to play this season so will service as a scout team back and be classified as a RS-JR in 2016.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Who's gone: Malcome Kennedy (eligibility expired), LaQuvionte Gonzalez (transferred to Kansas), Kyrion Parker (transferred to Garden City CC)
Who's back: #23 Sabian Holmes (5-11, 175, SR), #18 Edward Pope (6-4, 180, JR), #11 Josh Reynolds (6-4, 190, JR), #19 Jeremy Tabuyo (5-11, 191, JR), #82 Boone Niederhofer (6-0, 207. JR), #9 Ricky Seals-Jones (6-5, 235, SO), #2 Speedy Noil (5-11, 187, SO), #15 Frank Iheanacho (6-5, 225, SO), #13 Jamal Jeffery (5-9, 175, SO)
Who's new: #3 Christian Kirk 97 (FR), #16 Kemah Siverand 88 (6-1, 190, FR), #4 Damion Ratley 85 (6-1, 190, SO-TR)

The receiving corps in 2014 was a bit of a disappointment. While Malcome Kennedy was fantastic and Reynolds emerged as a pretty good fill-in for the irreplaceable Mike Evans, no other WR showed any kind of consistency. Speedy Noil has the raw talent and showed flashes of pure brilliance but his poor route running led to him struggling to get separation at times against better corners. RSJ also flashed high potential but his issue was more a lack of physicality and a case of the drops. Walk-on Boone Niederhofer ended up getting more and more time as other receivers had their issues.

New WR Coach Aaron Moorehead replaces David Beaty who left to become Head Coach at Kansas. This change at the top gives everyone a fresh start and it wouldn't be surprising to see different names emerge from an extremely talented group. In the spring true freshman Christian Kirk stood out as the obvious answer to replace Kennedy. Kirk has impressed everyone with his precision and dedication and it's hard not to see him being a major presence this year. Damion Ratley came on at the end of spring and could be a name to watch in fall camp. It's hard to know which guys will take the next step, but there really are no excuses to not find a group that should do real damage.

TIGHT ENDS

Who's gone: Cameron Clear (eligibility expired)
Who's back: #41 Brandon Alexander (6-6, 238, SR)
Who's new: #89 Jordan Davis 90 (6-4, 262, FR)

It's the same message every year for Aggie fans - this is the year we start using the TE. This time something dramatic has changed however with the hire of OL/RGC coach Dave Christensen, who has coached and designed schemes in the past with a heavy emphasis on the TE. It's a little bit awkward that the biggest loss at the position was not TE Clear but OL Compton who handled the starting role in front of both Clear and Alexander. This year the only real option is a true freshman Jordan Davis. Davis was very solid in the spring and adds a missing dimension from the offense but while everyone has extremely high hopes for him, it's hard to imagine him being an integral part of the offense just yet. But as the year roles on, expect to see him gain more responsibility as the offense takes on more of Christensen's influence.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Who's gone: Cedric Ogbuehi (NFL), Jarvis Harrison (NFL), Ben Compton (eligibility expired), Garrett Gramling (eligibility expired), Kimo Tipoti (retired), Zach Ledwik (retired)
Who's back: #56 Mike Matthews (6-2, 290, SR), #79 Joseph Cheek (6-7, 311, SR), #74 Germain Ifedi (6-5, 325, JR), #73 Jeremiah Stuckey 81 (6-4, 300, JR), #63 Ryan Lindblade (6-7, 308, JR), #72 Jermaine Eluemunor (6-4, 315, JR), #65 Avery Gennesy (6-5, 300, JR), #77 J.J. Gustafson (6-5, 295, SO), #75 Koda Martin (6-6, 302, RS-FR), #50 Tank Davis (6-4, 310, RS-FR)
Who's new: #78 Keaton Sutherland 96 (6-5, 301, FR), #72 Trevor Elbert 91 (6-6, 320, FR), #70 Connor Lanfear 90 (6-6, 305, FR), #64 Erik McCoy 86 (6-4, 315, FR)

Since 2012, the Texas A&M oline run blocking slowly but surely got worse each year. It's hard to pinpoint the exact problem as individually the players showed well, but as a unit, they failed miserably, especially in cases when the offense ran the ball in obvious running situations. By mid-year 2014 it was simply atrocious and it led to the dismissal of OL Coach BJ Anderson. Enter the Dragon. Dave Christensen has an extremely long career as both an Oline coach and OC with even a stop as a Head Coach for Wyoming. Due to internal AD issues, he became available from Utah this off-season and Sumlin snapped him up. On paper, it's hard to envision a better match as Christensen has an extensive history coaching an extremely physical style out of similar offenses at Missouri, Wyoming, and Utah. His fiery personality will also likely make him a fan favorite.

The early buzz is the first thing addressed was attention to detail. A lot of technique has been sloppy from footwork to hand placement. Those little things can definitely be important. But the bigger changes are in scheme, where Christensen will implement more power concepts to mix in with the zone scheme from previous years. In other words, instead of blocking a guy in their area, OL are being asked to pull, trap and lead almost for the first time since Sherman's stint. Such schematics are less dependent on "numbers in the box" and are more about creating their own hole in the defense. It also requires being much more physical, something the A&M oline has gotten away from.

This change has led to a slight reshuffling of where the current players stand on the depth chart and RS-FR Koda Martin and true FR Keaton Sutherland were two of the standouts in spring ball. Combined with 3 returning starters and 2 top tier JUCO OL that redshirted last year, the talent isn't really a question and success will come down to how they will work together and adjust to the new scheme. Four of the 5 spots are probably solidified heading into fall camp with LT Gennesy, C Matthews, RG Cheek and RT Ifedi leaving only the LG spot up for grabs. JR Jeremiah Stuckey filled in for Matthews in the spring at center and was so impressive he began getting reps at LG. He'll battle JR "London" Eluemunor and the two freshman for that role in the fall. The original thought was to play Erik McCoy to get him some experience at center but Martin and Stuckey's versatility, both took turns at center in the spring, should allow for all the incoming freshman to redshirt if they do not win a starting job.

DEFENSIVE ENDS

Who's gone: Tyrell Taylor (eligibility expired), Tyrone Taylor (retired)
Who's back: #10 Daeshon Hall (6-6, 260, JR), #15 Myles Garrett (6-5, 260, SO), #9 Qualen Cunningham (6-3, 240, SO), #40 Jarrett Johnson (6-3, 255, SO), #97 Darrell Jackson (6-5, 235, SO)
Who's new: #99 James Lockhart 92 (6-3, 250, FR)

There is an awful lot of excitement around the A&M DE situation. Everyone is talking about Myles Garrett but Daeshon Hall had a monster close to 2014 including being the best DE on the field in the bowl game. And both Qualen Cunningham and Jarrett Johnson showed elite flashes as freshmen. Word around the campfire is Hall carried over his late season play into spring ball and the DE spot was the most impressive defensive unit despite Garrett sitting out stretches. The unit was so good in fact that Julien Obioha, a 3-year returning starter, was asked to gain weight and make the transition to DT. Obioha will likely still see some DE looks in short yardage sets, but with the 2-deep all looking like future stars as well as the impressive, if not still very raw, Darrell Jackson waiting in the wings, he's just much more needed at DT. Incoming freshman James Lockhart is a bit in the Obioha mold that lacks ideal DE length but makes up for it with pure effort. While there is certainly a ton of talent that could enable Lockhart to redshirt, with only 5 other DEs officially, it wouldn't be surprising if he plays this year.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES

Who's gone: Ivan Robinson (eligibility expired), Jay Arnold (retired)
Who's back: #95 Julien Obioha (6-4, 270, SR), #83 Alonzo Williams (6-4, 305, SR), #98 Hardreck Walker (6-2, 300, JR), #55 Justin Manning (6-1, 300, SO), #92 Zaycoven Henderson (6-1, 290, SO), #13 Reggie Chevis (6-1, 280, SO), #90 DeShawn Washington (6-3, 285, RS-FR)
Who's new: #5 Daylon Mack 98 (6-1, 340, FR), Kingsley Keke 90 (6-3, 319, FR)

While the DE spot has been hailed, the DTs have been beaten up by many who feel they haven't lived up to their billing. It may not be a terribly fair assessment as DT is usually the slowest on the development curve and younger players are often eaten up. Most arrive from HS without proper technique or develop bodies because they have gotten by on pure size and athleticism to that point. So it's fairly routine for all schools that DTs emerge late in their college careers. For the first time since the 2012 season, A&M will be starting 2 DTs that have been in the program more than 2 years. Few would consider Zo Williams or Hardreck Walker elite, but they have developed into steady players that some of the more talented guys behind them are going to have to pass, whereas in years past, guys were simply thrust into the roles. Obioha and Henderson provided adequate experienced depth while the sometimes forgotten about DeShawn Washington claimed a 2nd team spot in the spring coming off a redshirt year. Justin Manning missed spring practice but provided his issues are behind him, could be a dark horse here. As far as incoming freshman, after Kyler Murray no one gets talked about more than Mack. Mack has the talent to force his way into the rotation almost immediately but with some steady bodies ahead of him, he's going to have to earn it. Keke has elite potential but he's probably looking at a redshirt as he played mostly 3-4 DE in HS and his body needs some time with Black Death.

LINEBACKERS

Who's gone: Jordan Mastrogiovanni (retired), Donnie Baggs (eligibility expired), Tommy Sanders (eligibility expired), Brett Wade (retired), Justin Bass (eligibility expired)
Who's back: #46 A.J. Hilliard (6-2, 245, JR), #33 Shaan Washington (6-3, 235, JR), #42 Otaro Alaka (6-3, 231, SO), #14 Josh Walker (6-1, 235, SO)
Who's new: #43 Claude George 87 (6-2, 236, JR), #7 Richard Moore 87 (6-0, 215, FR), #48 Landis Durham 87 (6-3, 232, FR), #35 Riley Garner 83 (6-3, 225, FR), #16 Dwaine Thomas 86 (6-2, 215, FR)

Another year, another year of transition for the LB corps. With only 4 returning, questions abound as to where this unit stands both in terms of talent and depth. JUCO George and fish Moore both enrolled early, got to take part in spring ball and got plenty of reps. However, neither looks a threat to start this year which is concerning given all 4 returnees sat out spring ball due to various injuries. Everyone has had a chance to sit in the film room with their new position coach Chavis and so there is a pecking order, but until they all get a chance to get on the field, it's pretty soft. Alaka seems the most likely to emerge as a star from this group given his play late in 2014. But there is also a lot of hope for AJ Hilliard who flashed brilliance in fall camp last year and in his one and only game. If those two are ready to go and shake off the rust before Sept 7th, this could be a very good unit. If they are slow to round into form, or there are injuries of any sort, this unit could again be catastrophic. The big worry is that while all the incoming freshmen are interesting projects, they could probably all use a redshirt for one reason or another. Clearly some are going to be forced to play and it's a concern. Even a player like Alaka who is extremely smart (on and off the field) took half a season to get up to speed.

CORNERBACKS

Who's gone: Deshazor Everett (eligibility expired)
Who's back: #1 De'Vante Harris (5-11, 190, SR), #22 Tavares Garner (6-0, 183, JR), #17 Alex Sezer Jr (5-9, 180, JR), #4 Noel Ellis (5-10, 185, SO), #28 Victor Davis (6-0, 195, SO), #8 Nick Harvey (5-10, 180, SO), #21 Brandon Williams (6-0, 205, SR)
Who's new: #27 Roney Elam 91 (6-2, 173, FR), #19 DeShawn Capers-Smith 89 (6-0, 182, FR), Priest Willis 96 (6-2, 185, JR-TR)

Along with LB, the CB situation is one that gives Aggie fans the most heartburn. The best CB is clearly 3-year returning starter Harris but his size has always been an issue. Harris was injured in fall camp last year and missed about 4-5 weeks of training and due to the nature of the injury, lost a good bit of weight. It wasn't until late in the season that he started to play well and despite an absolutely terrific performance against LSU, he is much-maligned by the fans. It's his senior year and the Aggie legacy gets one more chance to show why he's been so highly thought of since HS. If he struggles or can't make the transition to a new scheme, it's going to be another long year because frankly, there is zero depth here. Besides Vic Davis, none of the other returning CBs would be recruited for a press-man scheme and are all probably best suited as nickles. But only 1 guy can play nickel and Noel Ellis, returned from a serious bout with type I diabetes, showed in the spring that he hasn't lost anything. Garner, Sezer and Harvey round out the depth at CB and while not lacking in talent, none are particularly well suited for the scheme. After spring ball, the coaches decided to try Brandon Williams out at CB as he has all the requisite skills to be elite. His transition may well be the most watched storyline of fall camp. If it goes well, the CB situation could be solid. If not, it could be ugly. Freshmen Elam and Capers-Smith should both be contributors down the road but Elam needs weight and DCS played QB in high school so in an ideal world, they'd both redshirt. We aren't, however, living in an ideal world. Priest Willis is a transfer in from UCLA who will have to sit out the season but should provide an immediate boost next year. He will have 2 years of eligibility starting in 2016.

SAFETIES

Who's gone: Howard Matthews (eligibility expired), Floyd Raven (eligibility expired), Clay Honeycutt (eligibility expired), Jonathan Wiggins (retired)
Who's back: #12 Sam Moeller (5-11,191, SR), #26 Devonta Burns (6-0, 211, SR), #23 Armani Watts (5-11, 195, SO), #18 Donovan Wilson (6-1, 205, SO)
Who's new: #5 Justin Evans 90 (6-1, 195, JR), #30 Justin Dunning 93 (6-4, 215, FR), #18 Larry Pryor 92 (6-0, 195, FR)

While CB is pretty questionable, the situation at Safety ranks with DE as the best units on defense. Armani Watts showed he has star ability at times in 2014 though he also showed he wasn't physically ready at others. Donovan Wilson barely played to start the year but by the bowl game, had supplanted Howard Matthews as boundary safety and had an outstanding game. Those two returning mean the safety situation is in good hands. But in the spring, with Wilson sitting out, Justin Evans took control. He was so impressive he was elevated to first team FS, forcing Watts to SS where he is set to battle Wilson for a starting spot in the fall. Those 3 alone should help solidify the secondary and it's quite likely one will slide down to the Mustang position when Chavis goes to 6 DBs. Justin Dunning and Larry Pryor meanwhile are the highest rated safeties A&M has recruited in quite some time. This group of 5, only one of whom will even be a JR in 2015, should provide Chavis a lot of different types of players to mix and match and show contrasting looks to opposing offenses.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Who's gone: Josh Lambo (graduated)
Who's back: #24 Taylor Bertolet (5-9, 190, SR), #38 Drew Kaser (6-3, 210, SR), Shane Tripucka (6-3, 215, SO)
Who's new: #36 Daniel LaCamera (6-4, 210, FR)

Gone is Josh Lambo who came out of nowhere to give A&M a consistent reliable FG kicker the last two years. Returning is swagmaster Taylor Bertolet who will battle incoming freshman Daniel LaCamera for PK duties. Drew Kaser provides a steady, solid punter that's easy to undervalue. Speedy Noil will again return punts but Justin Evans showed a real knack for it in the spring so he and Nick Harvey will probably get a few chances throughout the year. As a kick returner, look for freshman Christian Kirk to pair with Noil to give opponents two gamebreaking returnees to worry about. As good as Speedy looked last year, Kirk may be even better.

When did the majority of arrests happen last year? Are we out of the woods on that front once fall practice starts?

Also, write up only has me more worried about LB's and cb's. That's the only thing I took from all of that. As is my nature.

Great posts!

Given the options we have at Safety, is there any chance that Armani Watts or Donovan Wilson might be tried at CB?

At LB, I know there are a lot of questions because of all the injury problems, but if we have just a bit of good luck on that front, I think we're going to be solid for the first time since 2012.

Armani could probably do it, but I don't think that's what the staff wants. I didn't realize Evans had taken Armani's spot. Very interesting.

Great stuff, tmc. Many thanks. I also loved your "enter the dragon" and "Taylor 'swagmaster' Bertolet" lines.

I don't want to say none because shite happens, but no. Neither has press CB skills. I think if you wanted to sit primarily in a soft zone, Armani would be a good fit at corner but we're not doing that any more

agree. Most people don't remember that he won the OU starting job til he got hurt and Perrine got a chance.

I also think he be a solid contributor this year on scout team like Carson was in '12. Having a back that can be that physical can help us prep for guys like Fournette, Henry, and Collins

I'm just hoping these new hires will get us in the right direction on offense and defense.

It's clear what we were doing was not going to work long term in the SEC sans having a once a generation QB like Manziel.

Thanks for write-up, was looking forward to the 2015 thread on fall camp.

Does anyone have an idea how the concept of having a run game coordinator will be implemented?

How much say will DC have in the actual play calling?

He will change a few things schematically, mainly the stance of OL, and be a big part of the offensive game plan meetings. Spav will be game day play caller though.
