Essentially becoming such an academically oriented school in a huge state, that it begins to destroy athletics?

Think about, more and more UTx has kids who have no real family or long term relationship with the university. For most of these minority kids, it's a means to an end for them. It might be a way to get out of poverty for some minority kids, or a way to get into the career they really want for others. But regardless, it's a means to an end.

These kids will be more academically oriented and could care less about athletics. While some may say that's okay, what does that do when these students become alumni?

Suffice to say, most of the minority students current at UTx, I seriously doubt are going to become big donors. If you don't have a connection to your university's big sports teams as a student, it doesn't happen once you are out of school.

You also have a lot of transplants in Texas, so again, there's no connection to the university. There's no "I grew up watching Alabama (or LSU, or Tennessee) with my dad" mentality in that situation. I seriously doubt most of the UTx students grew up watching Texas football.

Finally, Austin is basically Berkeley in the middle of the country now. So that means a population more concerned about social justice and protesting instead of sports.

Look at the other big states. New York could care less about college football and that's reflected in their college football support. California isn't much better. Cal and UCLA have pitiful support. USC has the history but still get mediocre support at best.

You look at Cal. Being in the most populous state, there's no reason Cal shouldn't be a major player at every sport. Except for the fact they just don't care. Cal has never been anything at football, men's basketball or women's basketball. I don't even think they've ever been anything at baseball or softball.

I could easily see the same thing happening at Texas. Academics getting so high to the point where athletics are de-emphasized and over time just go away in importance.

You do realize there's more to life than academics right? That college is about more than just the classroom.

Yeah schools like Cal and NYU have done a great job at cranking out mindless social justice warriors that end up at Starbucks.

Yes, but academics should be the most important thing for an academic institution.

This is the SEC.

There’s not a school in this conference paying professors more than football players

Well, some fans have T-shirts; others have diplomas.

What does my diploma have to do with the fact that SEC football players are making more money than SEC professors?

There’s a difference between raising academic standards and losing touch with the everyday Texas kid who grew up dreaming of being a Longhorn. Longhorns brag about their top 4% auto admit policy, but they’ve narrowed themselves down to a whole campus full of kids who didn’t even take extracurriculars in high school.

UT has already lost a great deal of the Texas-centered culture and identity that made it what it traditionally was. Schools like Texas A&M, Georgia, and Michigan prove you can have strong academics without sacrificing your personality, traditions, or football. UT is changing more and more with each new incoming class.

No shade. Just truth.

And yet next to none of your football players would get into UGA if they weren't playing football. So are you ready for UGA to end their dominant football program for academics?

Yes academics are important, I'm not debating that. But you are undervaluing what sports provide. As others have said countless times, 90,000 people aren't showing up at UGA to watch a kid take a test. They are showing up to watch a football game. That brings money into the university. Money for academics.

Sports provide community and camaraderie. With all due respect, most of my best moments at college were outside of the classroom. And I learned plenty outside the classroom about myself and about life. I would argue, if all you did at college was study and get an undergraduate degree, you flat out wasted your college years.

Sports keeps people, especially alumni, connected to their school in a way academics never will. That makes alumni and even just regular fans more likely to donate to the school in both academics and athletics. That connection might open doors for newer alumni at companies where a recruiter or manager is also an alumni.

Academics is important. But academics can't be the only thing. And that's where schools like Cal and NYU get it wrong.

A tier 1 research university's primary purpose is academia. Are you retarded?

100% agree. Schools like Georgia, Michigan, Texas A&M, Florida, North Carolina show you can have both. You can have schools with high academic standards that also place a high importance on athletic excellence.

You can have high academic standards while still maintaining your culture and traditions. Those are not mutually exclusive things.

But the way Texas is going, they are throwing away their traditions and culture. Another reason why I think they're destined to become another Cal.

Pumping out a bunch of average graduates who won't be able to make enough money to donate in the AI economy doesn't seem like the way to go.

You're declining kids who probably have lived in Texas for generations. Kids who probably watched Texas football with their dad or even grandfather growing up. You're replacing them with kids who could care less about Texas football or the importance of Texas football within the state.

You're replacing Texas kids with kids who, while technically citizens of Texas, have no real connection to the state. These are kids who will use Texas as a means to an end. These kids won't step foot on the UTx campus the minute they graduate. They won't support Texas athletics and they won't donate money to the university. They simply won't love the university like many long term Texans would.

As for what will change:

Get ready for "The Eyes of Texas" to be completed banned, since it's an "offensive" song to several groups.

Get ready for Cowboy hats and Cowboy boots to be replaced by kurtas and tunics.

Get ready for Beavo to be banned because it's "animal cruelty".

Smokey the Cannon will probably be on the chopping block later on. They'll say it's "too aggressive". Barbecue and other traditional Texas foods will be replaced by ethnic foods at tailgates, especially Indian foods.

Austin, TX is going to become another Berkeley and UTx will become another Cal, obsessed with social justice. All the California transplants are going to change and destroy what Texas is.

Not to make this political, but you'll see that in November when Texas, with the helps of many of these Indians, as well as some Hispanics and many California transplants, elect a Democrat Governor. She'll change Texas as well.

Lol if you're going to troll at least be realistic

If Texas becomes Cal, it becomes Cal. Who gives a frick, this is all meaningless.

I don't care that much, but I think you would care. I assume you are a Texas fan and don't want to see your football team become as irrelevant as Cal football.

But if Texas continues on this path, make no doubt about it, everything I mentioned will happen.

Famous last words for a lot of things. I'm sure you never thought "Red River Shootout" would be banned either. I bet Ole Miss fans in the 1970s or 1980s never thought the Confederate Flag would be banned in Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium either. I'm sure New Yorkers in 2001 or 2002 never thought a Muslim would ever become Mayor of NYC. Everyone always says "none of that will ever happen", until it happens.

Far far more improbably things have happened than anything I mentioned.
