How can someone think giving a college receiver 4.5 MM for one season is a wise financial move? I don’t care how good Jeremiah Smith is. That’s retarded. Then, you’ll have to pay more to keep him there for his last college season or hope he doesn’t opt out altogether for the NFL.

I have no idea what this market has turned into.

Nabers' rookie contract as a first round pick is $8 million a year.
McConkey is at $2.5 million per year average

WTF are we doing where college sophomores are making more than second rounders

Because if you sign him, you lock in a playoff spot and a chance at the national championship. Imagine you are the billionaire who ponied up and you are the hero

4.5 for a WR is absurd.

He’s a WR. He doesn’t guarantee you a national championship.

I’m not knocking him as a player, he’s elite and will be the best WR in the country, but I’m not paying him more than some NFL guys are getting.

You dont lock up a playoff spot by signing any WR

$4.5M should be QB only money and only for an elite elite guy. But things have just gotten stupid now. There's going to be some potential 2nd/3rd rounders coming up skipping the draft to come back as a senior because some school will throw them $4M-$5M which is what the NFL might pay them year 1.

Did you see him play in the playoffs? He is an elite elite guy with 2 more years. You add 15 TDs to your WR room, you are going to the playoffs and the billionaire who bought him is strutting around campus and the country club

What Smith did isn't unprecedented. All of these players had similar or better freshman years, Smith's numbers are just inflated because he played 16 games

MIKE WILLIAMS
XAVIER WORTHY
CALVIN JOHNSON
FITZGERALD
CRABTREE
KEYSHAWN JOHNSON
DWAYNE JARRETT
MARQISE LEE
MACLIN
MIKE EVANS
RIDLEY
KIRK
AMARI COOPER
AJ GREEN
JULIO
SIDNEY RICE
ANTONIO BRYANT
DORTCH
JUSTYN ROSS
TYLER BOYD
SAMMY WATKINS
STEFON DIGGS
RONDALE MOORE
DEON BUTLER
JONATHAN ORR
PLAXICO BURRESS

Jeremiah Smith Receiving: 70 catches for 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns
Rushing: Five rushes for 52 yards (10.4 yards per carry) and one touchdown
Rookie season is insane

Yards his freshman year.

46/1000/9 in 15 games

Those are just a few I picked out from your post.

More like 1265 yards and 14 TD's in 13 games

LINK

Also these players numbers relative to how much those teams passed is obviously another factor

Or he gets injured in fall camp & doesn't play a down. But hey, you're still a billionaire

As long as the season is and as injury prone as a guy getting 75-100 catches/year will be it's smarter to diversify your portfolio and spend that money on 4-5 guys imo
