YES, both Cam and Vick have great arms as well as wheels. Neither have good accuracy and neither are particularly smart.

They were accurate enough and smart enough to get to be the #1 pick in the draft, win national titles, win MVPs

YES they were - despite their known lack of accuracy. I was a huge Vick fan, have many of his jerseys (still!). Of course I hate CAM but recognize him as a great talent. CAM's a freak of athletic talent. If he was more mature and dedicated, he could be a more consistent player.

While those guys(Cam/Vick) are proven NFL talents and Fields is just getting started in college, I am simply pointing out that Fields has a better passing skill set and is a more mature and smarter player than either of those guys. Both Vick/Cam have great arm talent as far as strength of their arms but because neither were ever particularly consistent and couldn't complete a high percentage of passes, I would agree w/ you that what primarily made those guys special was the running part of the "dual threat".

I am simply saying that Fields is a much more balanced player at this point in his career and will likely continue to be - we shall see.

Cam had a higher completion percentage at Auburn than Justin Fields did at Harrison.

I'm not sure what your point is.

Are you insinuating that a passing offense at Auburn is like a passing offense at a high school in Ga?

I guess I'm looking for clarification on your point with this stat.

OK, so you want to compare HS stats to College stats? Fields had guys probably averaging 215lbs blocking for him at Harrison HS and receiving talent not the same either. Also, fairly certain Fields threw a lot more in HS than Cam - but if you want to compare stats, at least compare HS to HS.

Sure, but playing against East Paulding and River Ridge is a little different than going against LSU and Alabama as well.

I'm just saying I would expect someone who has elite arm talent and accuracy and is an elite student of the game to complete a higher percentage of passes against far inferior competition than a dummy with major accuracy issues.

Cam's completion percentage at Auburn was 66.1%

Fields completion percentage in high school was 65.7%

Was there a point that you were trying to make?

It’s more comparable than comparing college and the NFL to the Opening. I think Fields is a great passer. I’ve never said otherwise. I just think his running ability is what sets him about as that guy that could be a legend at UGA.

Obviously he hasn’t played a collegiate down so I don’t want to get to far ahead of things, but I’m incredibly high on his skill set.

Going back to the original topic. Lawrence has been groomed to play QB his whole life. He's a good athlete but his arm and knowledge of the game through years of reps and reading defenses etc... is what has gotten him to where he is.

Fields has always been an elite athlete. For most of his life was a baseball player first and when he did play football he was always the most athletic guy on the field and could make plays with his legs. He didn't start as a freshman, got hurt as a sophomore so has really only played a season and a half of Varsity football. Nobody is doubting his arm talent but even the most elite dual threat guys before him (Vick, Cam) have struggled throwing the football some at the highest levels because they have always been able to get out of trouble with their athleticism when a first or second read wasn't there. It's not a knock on Justin but it's almost impossible to coach those instincts out of guys who have been using their athleticism their whole lives and frankly it would be stupid to try and do so.

Great points... didn't realize Fields has only been starting at the position for two years. Last week the coaches were talking about how Lawrence's high school offense had a lot of similar elements to the Clemson offense, but the big difference being all of the protections. Between spring practice and his prior experience, he might be able to make the jump as a true freshman. I don't know if the kid will be Deshaun Watson good when he finally gets the reins. His tools/height are better, but Deshaun has something about him you can't coach... an uncommon desire to lead and win. Great player, even better person.

Hopefully they both do big things for their programs.

Fields hit a growth spurt during his Sophmore yr, as a frosh I believe he was 5'11 170lbs and growing into a 6'3 225lb young man he was able to keep his 4.4 speed. To show what type of hose he has Fields was clocked as high as 98mph on the diamond, some scouts felt he was a Carlos Correa type prospect at SS but he simply did not love the game like football.

can’t seriously be comparing the Opening performance to a college football game?

The point is directed to someone seemingly trying to diminish justin’s Passing ability. The opening removes the running component and he blew away the competition that included Lawrence.

The guy insinuating Fields is a better passer now than Cam ever was should be put down.

Can’t allow that kind of stupid to procreate.

98mph? was no where near that his junior year throwing. he had a good arm and was a good shortstop but I am not sure draftable quality. He looked the part for sure on the diamond. And who knows what might have been but 98mph I am calling bs on this. I think he played summer ball for the noles. Which had better pitchers than him on that team.
