I've never heard of him until last week, granted I don't know much about most of the support staff positions.

I found this when he left UNC for UT:

quote:

From Tony Basillo's website:

Director of Player Personnel Paul Gonnella left UNC Friday. He is believed to be headed to Tennessee.

Gonnella basically served as John Blake's right-hand man and was an integral, behind-the-scenes component in UNC's recruiting efforts.

UNC tried to keep him, but couldn't match some of the non-financial requests.

Those who are truly insiders know how important Gonnella was to UNC's recruiting efforts in the current class and already in the 2010 class (UNC is drastically in better shape with the 2010 class than they were with the 2009 class at the same stage).

Gonnella did a lot of coordinating of recruiting, which allowed Blake to focus on recruting UNC's top targets. Compare Blake's recruiting accomplishments with the 2009 class to the 2008 class -- it's almost night and day.

To put it simply, this is a significant loss.

Considering some of the defensive talent they brought in at UNC, I'll take this.

So we can expect our recruiting to get even better?

I think save 1 job(Memphis), he help land a better class than the previous year when he wasn't on staff. Tennessee's only went from 10 to 9, but the rest where fairly decent jumps. Purdue's went from 94th in 2011 to 33rd in 2012.

One thing though, he bounces around a lot...

Wait a minute- was this the class that ended up getting UNC in so much hot water for illegal recruiting?

I don't think they ever got in trouble for recruiting. They got in trouble for current players having contact with agents and academic fraud by way of tutors.

Yeah... two names that come to mind were Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn; didn't they still get drafted pretty high?
maybe 1st or 2nd round...can't remember...

Austin was a 2nd rounder, Quinn was a 1st.

I remember Saban doing everything in his power to land Quinn, he even flew up there to check on him after Quinn had the tumor removed from his brain...

North Carolina also hasn't had much trouble recruiting linebackers lately.

As if Alabama needed any help there...

We had a very good LB class last year, Bama really could do with just one or two LBs this year, and really focus on O-Line/D-Line depth as well as another CB or two. We've got our QB, we've got two good RBs, we had a stacked WR class this year, as long as we can sign Robert Foster we're good in that department too.

My friend is really good family friends with Alvin Kamara and Ryan Jenkins

Kamara loves Bama and LSU. My friend goes to AU with me and says War Eagle to him but he always says he just isn't feeling AU.

What's up with Ryan Jenkins? He said Jenkins got skyped by Saban with his family and received an offer but I.didn't see it on rivals. Maybe conditional?. He was really excited but his brother goes to Clemson and he is really interested in UCLA

I haven't watched anything on him myself, I only know what has already been said on here. I'm not a big fan of DBs' film in regards to recruiting. Often times they leave too much out to truly see anything.

I'm more of an OL/DL/TE/RB guy...

Oh, well, I was wanting your opinion because I hadn't heard anything about him until I saw BuccWild and AMM AU raving about him. He's a very under the radar guy right now, but I love the way he plays. I also saw some interesting info about him on 247 (when I Googled Jonathan Cook) from BOL. I don't know whether or not it's true, but it's from 16 days ago.

quote:

I'm no insider, but I randomly have a little info on Johnny. Hope I don't step on any of the staff's toes with this... He had previously been on Saban’s informal top 20 watch list. On Monday, Coach Pruitt came to get some current film on Johnny and after Saban reviewed the tape, he told Coach Pruitt “We are moving his arse to the top 6.” Those are the exact words that Coach Pruitt repeated to Coach Freeman at Spanish Fort High. I wish this kid the best and hope he excels wherever his talent takes him.

Staff - you have any other info about this kid? He look to move up in the state rankings? TIA.
