Alabama received its second commitment of the week this weekend with Pensacola (Fla.) Washington defensive tackle Darius Paige pledging to the Crimson Tide. The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder selected the Tide over offers from Kentucky, Connecticut, FIU, and Louisville.
“I committed to Alabama,” said Paige. “The reason why I decided to commit to them is they’ll stick with me, they have a good winning program, and it’s kind of close to home.”
Paige discussed his commitment with head coach Nick Saban and area recruiter Jeremy Pruitt.
“The coaches were happy. Coach Saban was talking about me coming up there in the summer and getting to know all the coaches and players. That was pretty good.
“My relationship with Coach Pruitt is pretty good. They said that they like how I chase down plays and how I’m a real big, athletic guy.”
The Panhandle standout attended one of Alabama’s junior days in January alongside teammate Dejon Funderburk and plans to return to Tuscaloosa in the coming months for camp.
“Their practice facilities were really nice when I went up there. I’m planning on going back for the camp. I’m pretty solid with Alabama.”
Paige becomes Alabama’s thirteenth commitment and first from the Sunshine State in the class of 2013. He has a grade of 88 from 247Sports, making him a high three-star prospect.

Seriously? We couldn't wait 2 weeks to get him in camp and see him up close against good competition? This is certainly a head scratcher.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do when you want to beat Louisiville to the punch.

He's got the size and build to be a true 2 gap DT. I'd the staff feels they can groom him (after the S&C program) into what Cody or Chap were, then you take the commit. He'll be a 4 star with 3 dozen offers by seasons end.

I haven't watched his film but his size reminds me of Kerry Murphy. He might be someone that could play NT or DE depending on where we need him. Welcome aboard Darius!
ETA: If this is going to bring down our star average, then he better be good damnit!

Don't get me wrong, I hope Paige is a beast. But he was coming to our camp anyways to try to earn his offer. I would have just let it play out that way.

He looks like he has potential, but will probably be a bit of a project. He's really quick off the snap, but he plays a bit high. If he's a biscuit under 300 pounds he carries it really well.

Someone said he measured in at 6'5" 295 at a recent combine.

Watched his film. He moves extremely well for his size and plays with a mean streak which are the basic elements you look for in a DL. The technique issues can be remedied and I'm sure they'll start working on that when he comes to camp.

I saw that. He's put together well for his size. Cochran will turn him into a monster.

Came from behind to take 2 of 3 from UGA in baseball. We're on a roll now baby, getting hot at the right time! Oh, wait, our season is over

Don't know why any Bama fans are worried around Paige. If he doesn't live up to the offer, it will just be dropped.
And Elite 11 is so rigged, it is amusing. All the non-ESPN talent evaluators who were at the Atlanta regional were shaking their heads at the results there. It is a made for tv camp now. They want all the top QBs there and will rig the regionals any which way to get the most "photogenic" assortment they can.

Mine & Mag's previous eval of Paige's film for those that missed it:

TY very much Mag, I'm assuming you've watched, would like to know what you think about Darius Paige
Here's my opinion:
Great upper body strength and explosion, makes lazy OL pay with violent hands, but horrible stance technique, almost a lean. disects run very well and is a very sure tackler, likes to play the run it seems more than the pass because of his technique, can push through double teams fairly easy, but that also needs work, won't be able to do it on SEC level, REALLY would like for the coaches to get him at camp and see against competition to earn the offer, but a physical specimen seems like with great feet and athleticism, reminds me a lot of a taller Josh Chapman, body type and athleticism like top 15 NFL Draft pick LSU DT Brockers IMHO
What do you think Mag?
Mag's:

Much of the same you do. IIRC B.T.W isn't the best school to get the proper coaching. It's been pretty spotty producing D-1 talent recently, after the likes of Jon Demps, Mike Taylor, and LaDarius Green a few years back.
I do like his size as a potential NG and that he does play it already, but that stance is wonky. I remember seeing James Carmon playing NG at his JuCo with a similar stance, ended up playing OT for State. But despite it, the end results are usually good for Paige.
Camps will be big for him, like it was for Lake last year. He's a little more on the map, but it's not like he's Adams or Liner. I can't check it since 247 is acting weird for me, but they had him ,at least at one point, over the likes of Maquedis Bain.
I wouldn't be opposed to him getting an offer as the NG in the class, but at some point Bama has to make these "project" NG, or rather just high school NGs, turn out. They got lucky with Chapman, and he wasn't even a full evaluation...

Doesn't play high as much as I'd expect honestly with that stance, but the stance is truly horrible, all his weight is on the balls of his feet and his butt is way too low almost a squatting stance rather than attack stance, get that fixed and he will be an absolute MONSTER his explosion is already good and that shows how strong upper body is, gonna be a BEAST!!

I can't see his highlights. Hudl requires Microsoft Silverlight to view their vids and I'm on my phone. I'll give him a look once I get on my laptop. Granted, QBs are my specialty so my opinion on a DT should be taken with a grain of salt.

Two weeks? There's no way I can wait that long

So what's the feeling with Allen? Wasn't he just in Tuscaloosa?
