Arnett was in a tough position after Leach's death. Biggest mistake was trying to dump over the air raid offense given the circumstances. Moving away from the air raid is like moving away from the triple option; it takes a while to pull it off.

Chadwell and Leipold would be high on my list. Curt Cignetti, Willie Fritz, Jerry Kill, and Jon Sumrall would all by on my call sheet as well.

I'd bet they make the call. Say what you will about him, but MSU was at their peak when he was there.

Mullen burned the bridge. If you go that way, you might as well get Tom Herman. Same type hire, style, personality, etc.

I wonder if Orgeron has contacted them? wonder if he would return to coaching?

Yep. Only difference is Herman will kiss the players himself instead of relying on his wife for that.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported some candidates to consider are Liberty’s Jamey Chadwell, Kansas’ Lance Leipold, Tulane’s Willie Fritz, Florida Atlantic’s Tom Herman, Troy’s Jon Sumrall, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby and SMU coach Rhett Lashlee.
Is Chadwell that good or did he inherit a good team?

State could hire Willie Fritz of Tulane. He has a great track record. He's a little old at 63 but probably has some more good years left in him.
I wish A&M would hire him.

The team was in shambles in year one AFTER taking your program a complete 180 from the air raid.

That's an interesting name. He has seemed to fall completely off the radar.

This might be the chance for Gus to make his triumphant return to the SEC.

I'm the AD in Starkville I'd grab the best air raid guy I can find, hire some assistants who can recruit and pretend Arnett never happened.

No point in that, most of the air raid guys in our offense are gone after this year. We will be rebuilding no matter what system we have

Big difference in those two. Mullen built the program, stadium, atmosphere to something we had never seen. I'd sweep the ashes under the rug and rebuild it in a heartbeat.

I don't blame him for gaining a promotion somewhere else and taking it, hell any of us would.

Just tell him Hevesy stays at home and the keys are yours.

You were blessed with the Pirate.

Of course anyone else will be a disappointment.

But I do hope you find someone who can bring a realistic level of success.

Why would we want an older less motivated Mullen?

Retreads don't work, you would think we would have learned our lesson with Ron Polk.

He inherited a team in disarray after CHF left. He has done an exceptional job. Hope to keep him in Lynchburg for a long, long time.

Yeah, at least Herman would have a chip on his shoulder and motivation with Texas being on the schedule.

Our fans were all about Herman until he laid two eggs in a row and is now 4-6 at FAU. Not sure we’d go down that road.

Lashlee has been a popular name on message boards, but my guess is he’d prefer Arkansas (his alma mater) if it opens up.

I’ve been firmly in the Curt Cignetti camp and still am. I think you make someone like him or Chadwell tell you no.

It’s gonna take someone who can really instill discipline in these kids.

That’s what made Sherrill & Mullen somewhat successful bc they were hard nosed.

Cignetti or Fritz. They’re both old but State needs some stability. Similar situation with Luke at ole miss and Pitman at Arkie. But Cignetti and Fritz are much better.
