I had the same consternation when I played ball my freshman year at a small school before transferring. I couldn't believe I was going to end up being a sidewalker

I grew up an LSU fan, attended undergrad elsewhere, then went to LSU for post-grad. All through college, my school came first but still always rooted for LSU as well.

I have degrees from three schools. I told my daughter that she should pick the school that fits her the best based on the academics and campus life that she wants. The t-shirts that I dressed her in all of her life shouldn't be the determining factor.
She is starting at a school that I did not attend, and I am perfectly fine with that decision. She is undecided as to her ultimate academic goals and may end up transferring.
My son is still several years away from the college application process. His academic preferences seem to be trending toward an engineering field; so, his options won't be as broad.
***I gave my daughter a puppy during her junior year of high school. She's willing to leave me, but she won't leave her dog. LOL

Lol, I work in Aerospace. Worked with and/or for: NASA, Boeing, Lockheed, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Rocket Lab, DARPA, and more. I've only come across a handful of Auburn grads. I've seen a lot from Georgia Tech, Purdue, Florida, LSU, Alabama, and Mississippi State.

A&M has admissions numbers that don't really compare because they include "System Admits" and "Blinn Team" which are programs that if you go to a System school (A&M Corpus, A&M Commerce, etc) or go to Blinn CC and get a enough GPA you can transfer to main campus. Most schools don't count those numbers.
For instance the stats I saw last year were A&M was pushing 60k applicants and about 14k got regular admission 25k got System or Blinn but all were counted as "accepted". Texas does a somewhat similar program with their System schools and ACC but they generally don't count those as "admitted". That doesn't count the Engineering or Business schools, to get into those is extremely competitive. I know a kid with an extremely high GPA, 20+ hours of college credit, and a 1400 SAT that did not get into A&M Engineering for instance. Texas is just as tough. The Top 10% rule that allows for auto admission into A&M (Top 6% for Texas) causes problems because it lumps a Top Tier Suburban school in with a crap school from South Texas. There just aren't enough seats for a state pushing 30 million.
For A&M and Texas they have over 90% of Undergrads from the State because Texas is so big with so many large and highly rated HS's, there are about 250 6A HS's for instance (over 2300 students) so the supply of quality students is high, especially with the city hubs of DFW, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. It's a big drop from Texas and A&M in terms of academics to the next State school because of the Permanent University Fund (PUF) that only goes to A&M and Texas and is tens of Billions of dollars.
So A&M and Texas don't really have to care about rankings other schools do. They don't recruit or advertise really. Huge amounts of Texas kids now go to SEC Schools and OU because they offer in state tuition or close to it and want to go somewhere cooler than Texas State or North Texas. My son could have gone to Arkansas for cheaper than A&M for instance and virtually all of his friends are there from his Austin HS, Arkie got more kids than A&M or Texas from his HS and has a big pipeline there.
As to the OP I would say Ole Miss. Mainly a Mediocre Liberal Arts school with a big Frat scene so unless you want to go be a lawyer or go into sales or if you want your daughter to find a husband I don't see the appeal. The kids I know who went there make it seem like 13th Grade.

I work in Huntsville and worked for contractors that support all that you just mentioned and I completely agree with you. Mississippi State is actually well represented.

Yeah, there are schools that are good for some things and not others. MSU seems to be good when it comes to engineering. Maybe they suck at everything else, who knows? Ole Miss is apparently good for Law and Medicine. I don't know if they even do engineering. LSU has a good dental school and engineering school.
I would imagine the schools higher up the list are simply more well rounded and above average in more areas. Like Arkansas.

One of the things that hurts UGA in the rankings is a lack of a medical school. UGA has partnered with what used to be the Medical College of Georgia to open a campus in Athens, but it really hasn't given any additional "cred" academically yet.
UGA also has very limited engineering offers, which also hurts it.
Its public affairs and journalism schools are highly rated, and its business school has a good reputation.

They’ve pumped a ton of money into it over the last couple years and they’ve shot it from like #175 to #100 over the last several years. I’ve talked to some in the program who thinks we will be in the #50-60 range within 5 years

Backup schools can be whatever school they wish. All have pluses and can take them where they want/need to go.

Well ... I received acceptance letters from ta&m (along w/ dorm info, etc) just from sending my SAT scores. I NEVER EVEN APPLIED. Tells you something.

My kids have gone to Auburn, Bama and Texas so far.
They were only not allowed to consider LSU, sorry baws.

I’m same as far as my son. TBH I have heard very good things about Ole Miss business school.
