Yep. UGA has improved enough that a lot of people are choosing free tuition at UGA over $55k at Vandy, UNC, and Duke.

I heard it's very difficult to get an academic scholarship at Duke and Vandy, because everyone applying had a 4.0+ GPA and 30+ ACT.

I wouldn’t go as far as say I wouldn’t have paid, but I’m glad my daughter chose Mizzou and not Arkansas after visiting both.

Tennessee actually has a higher acceptance rate than LSU. LSU's requirements for in-state admissions are very clear. If you don't have the grades or ACT score, you most likely don't apply to go there.

Doesn’t part of this have to do with louisiana having lower education rates in general? They might reject more people but in general people in Tennessee perform better academically, which is why Tennessee ranks higher despite a higher admission rate?

And similarly a lot of people are choosing to go to KSU for a year then transfer to UGA or Tech rather than pay out of state for Auburn or Bama

I did my undergrad at Chattahoochee Tech. Transfers only need a 2.5 GPA.

Tennessee also has a higher average ACT score and GPA for incoming freshmen. 27 and 3.7 compared to 26 and 3.4 at LSU. I know as an in-state student, you could get an academic scholarship with those numbers in Tennessee 20 years ago when I was a high school senior. Almost anywhere in the SEC was pretty damn easy to get into, with Ole Miss, State, and Alabama having iirc the easiest requirements. A lot has changed in that time

That’s essentially the requirement to get into UGA these days. UGA’s mid 50 in ACT was 31-34 last year lol

Duke and Vandy are more like 4.3+ GPA and 33+ ACT

Same thing has been happening in TN since we got Hope in 2003. We're just years behind where Georgia is. But it's nuts seeing kids from good high schools with good grades end up at places like UTC because they can't get into UTK. Definitely wasn't that way when I was in high school

How come TN Hope doesn't cover 100% like it does in GA?

Seen this happen a dozen times.

Parent: Don't go there, i hate that school.

Child: They've offered me a scholarship.

Parent: Well then, Go Them.

Maybe they perform better academically, because the schools are better. Which means the Louisiana kid who scores highly is even smarter than the Tennessee kid who had the advantage of a good school system.

What one college would you want them never to apply?

Any that will leave them $100k+ in debt without receiving a professional degree if I'm being honest.

Outside of the elite schools, there isn't a lot to be gained or lost from one degree to the next.

This assumes the same level of student is applying across the board.

If 30k HS students with 3.5 GPA and 1300 SATs all apply to A&M, then 99% might get in.

But if 10k HS students with 2.5 GPA and 1000 SATs all apply to Lsu, then 50% might get in.

Which is getting the better crop?

It's moved up since back in my day. I'm old, just ask the thirtysomething teenager on the board.

It used to cover most of tuition before the tuition costs got out of control. In-state tuition (not including room and board) for UTK was like $5k 20 years ago. That number is now $13-14k. Hope, I believe pays out $4-5k. Had a lot of friends get Hope plus an academic scholarship so they essentially got paid to go to school. Academic scholarships were easier to come by back then too.

Ha. Didn't even enter my consciousness as an option to disparage. Even my subconscious did not believe this question applied to Mizzou.

As a grad, no way in hell LSU is better school than Auburn

This is how they rank them

Number of Yankees from private schools X number of elite NY Jewish kids X ranking of cost

For boys

UTk - the butt chugging thing is weird
ATM - other posters have provided good reasons

Girls - as far away from Lane Kiffin as possible
