Don't forget about Mel Tucker at Michigan State.

$95m, 10-year contract.

Lol didn't they go 11-2, beat Michigan and win a NY6 bowl game last year?

It's Michigan State, not USC. They're allowed to have rebuilding years. Especially when coaches can show that credibility in being able to succeed.

5-5 is unacceptable when you are getting paid that much, even i a "rebuilding" year.

Yep. You’re not getting paid that much to *try*. Anybody can *try*.

And this is why your program is no longer relevant.

I'm... not a Michigan State fan?

Our program (which just hosted gameday for the second time of the year, so the relevancy argument is odd) is bad because coaching has been a mess. Sarkisian is supposed to be an offensive mind and struggled immensely. These are not overnight fixes.

That's just the going rate for coaches these days. And Michigan State is not the brand that y'all apparently think it is.

Y'all have such short-term memory when it comes to fandom that it's actually insane

Where there is smoke there is fire. I do think the verbal agreement is bs, however I have no doubt Lane is entertaining it.

I would agree, but this is Michigan State we're talking about. If Michigan or Ohio State or USC or LSU or whoever were "rebuilding" given the recruiting they usually have and went 5-5, then I would understand the vitriol.

Y'all act like Michigan State is supposed to recruit in the top 10 every year and their supposed to be in NY6 bowl games every single year. They don't and they're not.

These rebuilding years for programs like this still a whole hell of a lot less when you just delivered one of the schools top 5 best finishes in program history

The SEC where every team has been on game day less than Texas sans Tennessee? Your relevancy accusation still makes no sense Are they a "good team"? Nah, probably not. Are they "irrelevant"? Idk, but ESPN is making a pretty good case toward the negative there, too.

I know Texas football should be better (albeit finishing with 8 wins would be marked improvement from the 5-win mark a year ago), but unfortunately some fixes take longer than others.

Fans in just about every fanbase can relate at one time or another.

Because of Jimbo, no one's going to get offered these kinds of contracts again.

Correct. Any school that doesn't include a performance out, is stupid. If the school can guarantee big money, the recepient coach should guarantee wins.

In all seriousness, any D1 coach in the nation could win 3 or 4 games with aTm talent.

Sorry, he's getting paid $9.5 million. 5-5 is unacceptable no matter where he is for that salary.

Gus was eventually let go because he was getting paid as a top-5 coach, recruiting in the top-12, and not getting top-25 results.

Rebuilding for a $9.5 million coach is 7-8 wins minimum

That shouldn't have been downvoted. But, conference championships will still matter as they are the golden ticket info the CFPs. The at large teams give some breathing room, but 10 wins isn't a guaranteed spot by any means.

Just because it’s less doesn’t make it important. I agree with what you’re saying. It will never turn into being viewed like basketball or baseball but it won’t be a requirement to get in.

Point still stands. If he’s got us consistently winning ten games we’ll have a pretty damn good shot of getting in. Seeding is great but getting in is all that matters. Plenty of great teams have lost in the playoffs.

Auburn is close to making the formal offer. Formal offers generally mean both sides are in agreement.

Tucker went 2–5 in 2020 (covid shortened) then started 8–0 in 2021, beating Michigan, before news broke regarding his extension.

They promptly lost to Purdue and got smashed by Ohio State, finishing the season 11–2.

So far in 2022 they have losses to unranked Washington, Minnesota, and Maryland, and have been blown out by Ohio State and Michigan.

His career record at MSU is 18–12 (12–11), and he's got about $85.5m remaining on his contract.

I wouldn't say Ole Miss is a better program, but I think Kiffin is a better fit there than Auburn.
