Auburn's highest CFP ranking has been #3, and that was for a total of 2 weeks.

Before last year, half your fanbase was ready to run Gus out on a rail.

Last year they were #2 before the SECCG. Some thought they should have been ahead of Clemson at the time.

State got destroyed by Auburn and Georgia on the road because they were back to back games with a bunch of young players who weren't ready for the moment. They got better as the year went on.

We saw that against their biggest rival.

That is really the issue. What Gus has done is better than anyone else in the SEC to this point. Kirby has a chance to surpass Gus, but Gus also has the opportunity to add to his resume. Using Saban as a base for satisfaction in coaching is idiotic IMO. Many coaches have had some level of success at bama, but none (not even Bear) has accomplished anything like what Saban has done.

I agree. I actually think Gus has the right formula compared to some others with a similar overall record. His best seasons are memorable (2013, 2017) while his worst ones are ugly and/or disappointing. However, I'd rather have my good be great (12-2/13-1) and my bad be sickening (7-6/8-5) than have everything be meh (9-3).

Is Gus still calling the plays ? If so, I will take my chances with LSU.

But why?

It's just how I see the season playing out. I suspect Auburn to most likely be a 2 or 3 loss team this season. I think the defense will be even better than last year, potentially a top 5 defense in the country, with an experienced QB running a usually high scoring offense (even if at times inconsistent).

I just feel like this year, we buck the trend and split the UGA and Bama games. That isn't unreasonable with a top notch defense and experienced QB. I expect UGA to be good this year and to win the East, but I also expect them to take a step back from National Championship contention and be a top 10 to top 15 type team in November.

My prediction is Auburn beats Washington to start the season, and get the hype train rolling. Have a baffling loss to Texas A&M at home to kick off November. Then rebound to beat UGA on the road, only before we lose to Bama to end the season.

Course correction to what? A top-15 team?

It’s not impossible, but it’s not a smart bet. Auburn hasn’t won in Athens since 2005, and Once auburn slips in November, it usually falls hard.

also know that penalties are part of football.

Not all penalties are equal in effect or common. The first penalty is an extremely rare one and it was essentially a turnover.

So they lose 33-17 ? Oh wait, how about 33-10 ? Maybe AU wouldn't have been dancing around when UGA scored at the end of the game.

Doubtful. The score was 9-7 when that penalty occurred, and Auburn had just gained negative 7 yards on back to back drives. The safe assumption is the score remains low and close without the uga special teams implosion.

Maybe "safe", but not logical.

Or accurate, for that matter - your recollection of the game situation is incorrect. Here's the drive chart following UGa's first-posession TD up until the interference penalty (which only moved the ball up from the AU 15 to the AU 30 - we still had to go 70 yards for the TD):
quote:

AU 1st A22 11:15 Kickoff G37 08:19 *FIELD GOAL 8-41 2:56
UGA 1st G22 08:14 Kickoff G25 04:55 Punt 5-3 3:19
AU 1st A39 04:55 Punt G20 01:20 *FIELD GOAL 12-41 3:35
UGA 1st G47 01:09 Kickoff A46 14:44 Punt 3-7 1:25
AU 2nd A09 14:44 Punt G13 12:03 *FIELD GOAL 8-78 2:41
UGA 2nd G28 11:56 Kickoff G17 10:17 Punt 3--11 1:39
AU 2nd A33 10:17 Punt A25 08:07 Punt 3--8 2:10
UGA 2nd G34 08:07 Punt G42 06:12 Punt 3-8 1:55
Prior to the penalty on the punt, AU's offense had managed 152 net yards on four posessions, compared to UGA's minus-1 on it's last three. Your defense was toughening up in the red zone and forcing AU to settle for FGs, but it's pretty clear which team was dominating the LOS on both sides of the ball at this point. And it continued, "special teams implosion" notwithstanding - your next 7 possessions amassed a mere 78 yards and 3 points, by which time it was 40-10.

I would agree, but our sickening is a much, much lower bar...

I do think Gus is one of the few coaches who has really put up a fight in games against Saban. The truth is, Saban has dominated college football in a way I have never really seen and doubt we will see again.

But again, if the Oline is subpar, this season will go off the rails quickly.

He is an Ellis Johnson Defense away from being 3-2 against Saban. His 630 yards of Offense in 14, was the biggest waste of talent in SEC History.

The Offensive Line last year was subpar last year at times, it didn't cause the season to go off the rails. Again, under Hand the OL was an injury away from disruption. I know a few HS Coaches that wonders his logic of moving people around instead of developing backups. I think Gus realized this at the end of the season.

I hope you are right.

I think the team will be very formidable if the Oline is not a repeat of the position shuffling we saw last year.

The first game will say a lot.

Its a safe assumption because its both factual and logical. Compare the 1st 3 drives to the next 2 drives:

- Drives 1-3 were 26 plays for 140 yards. 3 FG's. 5.4 ypp.
- Drives 4-5 were 6 plays for negative 7 yards. 2 punts. -1.2 ypp.

Something clearly changed. Its not uncommon for Gus to start hot and then get very cold. We have seen it in most UGA/Gus games. We also saw it vs LSU last year. Those examples only add to the safe and logical assumption I reached.

If you are going to try to correct me, at least get it right. The penalty gave AU the ball on the AU 46 per ESPN, which means yall had to go 54 yards.
