Will Ms St's defense be the most improved in the SEC?

It's time to start looking at the upcoming season. I started with looking at returning starters and returning production. Naturally, Ms ST came up due to the numbers returning.
For me, this may be the most improved defense in not only the SEC, but the NCAA.
2021: This defense ranked #12 in stopping the run and Was top 30 overall.
The front 7 returning:
- Top 4 DL return..
- 6 of the top 7 return.
- Add back a lost piece in a DE that was out last season.
If the reports are accurate, the Secondary has improved as a unit via recruiting and transfer. The only real piece to replace was Emerson who is now in the NFL.
The only thing keeping them out of the top 10 would be a lack of improvement in getting to the QB. That alone was a massive issue IMO.
I see them back in the top 10 on defense.

The defense is going to be salty, no doubt. But that schedule is brutal. Msu will be improved on both sides but we may still only win 7 games. Just being realistic with that schedule.

Well, the DC has had time to grow the rooster to fit his needs. Does that mean they are vets? No all.
I think that is more evidence that the next 2 years should keep Ms St in the top 10 on defense.
It's not like it's some sort of foreign land to MSU. They have had tough defenses for years.
The next question is how does that help a Mike Leach offense and in wins.

Tough schedule for sure.
Road games.... etc

The DC really seemed to be an up and comer and had a lot of interviews but never seemed to be offered a job.
Wonder if he was just making unreasonable demands?

Man, I don't follow that enough to know. I do know he interviewed.
BTW.. Me saying they will be the most improved does not mean the best SEC defense.

We will be good on both sides of the ball. Tough schedule but Georgia lost a hell of a lot and we get them in Starkville. That’s my big upset pick for us
I think we go 9-3 and citrus bowl

He likes working with Leach a lot. Arnett lacked personnel last year and his stock cooled because of it. We'll be much improved this year.

I could see that.
I bet Leach is a pretty chill "boss" and probably doesn't butt into the defense guys too much.

No. They will struggle to win 7 games.
They had players sit out and they lost to Texas Tech.
They won’t be much better. They didn’t nail the transfer portal and their coach doesn’t understand running the ball

It'd be awesome to see yalls defense return to how great it was in 2018. Yall mfers were stout.

Total autonomy over the defense. Leach doesn't know what defense is.

Good luck with that.

I don't think they will. They return something like 18 starters.
They lost 3 games by 3 or less and still won 7.

They didn’t nail the transfer portal
They needed very few pieces in the DB area.
They picked up four 4 star players for the backfield. I'm pretty sure that one of those will step up.

I mean, based on all that information, we’d be fools not to pencil state into a sugar bowl spot.

They return the same starters that gave up a lot of points last year. Sometimes all of them returning isn’t the best thing. Just sayin....

It's basically Arkansas' schedule from last season but y'all dont get to play Texas.

True. They were also 5 points away from not being bowl eligible with two G5 losses. Had the LA Tech coach not just absolutely shite the bed, Leach may not have survived the year.
That said I do think they will be better defensively. Looking for Pickering to have a big year on the DL. He hasn’t lived up to his potential yet but I think he takes a big step forward which will help what was a disappointing secondary last year considering the corner talent. I also think they’ll miss Brule more than they admit.
Bigger concern will be whether or not it matters if the offense doesn’t keep progressing so the defense can get a break. I’m afraid losing Cross, Polk, Heath, etc. will make the offense take a step back.

“3 games by 3 points or less.” One of those games was Memphis State. State had way more talent than Memphis State.
