when you were already good, it's kind of hard to be the most improved the next year

We will be good on both sides of the ball. Tough schedule but Georgia lost a hell of a lot and we get them in Starkville. That’s my big upset pick for us

Good luck with that.

Lol. Georgia can't lose!! They could smack yall square in the mouth and send Stetson Bennett to the locker room on the first drive. I wouldn't talk too much shite. That pirate beat our arse like a drum following a natty. (I hate you, Bo Pelini) I think State could be a tough out this year.

Mullen sure as hell knew how to get those JUCO hosses on the line. State was always one of our toughest trench battles. With Leach seeing is believing in that regard.

Lucky for us we got a head start on missing Aaron Brule last season. He's a good ball player, but he was supposed to lead the defense last year, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't even starting by the end of the season.

Mizzou will be in the conversation, if only because going from "absolute steaming dog shite" to "barely mediocre" is a pretty substantial jump

I think State improves this year. They won’t be challenged in the non conference slate like they were last year. Arizona is their P5 opponent. Kicking off in the desert at 11 pm. ET sucks until you realize how bad Arizona is. They were one score away from going 0-12 last year.

But 4-4 in the conference with that schedule is the ceiling. It’s brutal. 2-6 or 3-5 are the likely outcomes.

I’m afraid losing Cross, Polk, Heath, etc. will make the offense take a step back

Cross and Polk yes, Heath, no. WR group is deeper and better overall this year.

Looking for Pickering to have a big year on the DL. He hasn’t lived up to his potential yet but I think he takes a big step forward which will help what was a disappointing secondary last year considering the corner talent. I also think they’ll miss Brule more than they admit.

Brule won't be missed. He wasn't even starting the second half of the season. Pickering is our 3rd best returning DT. We should be ok at CB, and picked up a nice transfer at safety.

They didn’t nail the transfer portal and their coach doesn’t understand running the ball

We did ok in the portal, but did better in the class.

We are on the same page JJ. State's winning the West this year.

Leach is capable of losing to any P5 team at any time. Our biggest question mark on the whole team this year is with the starting qb. Can he hack it? Because Leach would let the season run off the rails before he'd replace him.

They could but uga just might have a capable backup qb. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Best I can remember, it was a massive issue with the OT that transferred from us. Lashley? He was not good.

Improve at the one spot and losing at the other does not translate into worse. It can mean better.

For the offense to take a a step forward, the run game needs to improve. That does not mean run more. It means make the defense pay every time they drop the 8.

To me, that's an OL issue.

Wasn't he the LB that would always come close to sacking the QB but could not change direction well.... result in running past the QB or falling at his feet?

Man coverage was the death nail against Leach's offense that year. Your defense never got a clue for some reason.
Our offense was much of the same last season. If anyone dares to throw man coverage at us this season, i expect a similar 10.5 yards per attempt this season.
A dominant front 4 can give Stetson fits, though. It could allow cover 2 man or cover 3 to keep a lid on our offense.

Loses all credibility without Stanford. They have 10 straight weeks of play with 6 on the road after having their bye in the third week, Phil Steele has them at #7 in his Toughest Schedules rankings.

THE PAC-12

Toughest: STANFORD (No. 7 nationally)

Easiest: UCLA (No. 75 nationally)

Not only does Stanford get Notre Dame on the road in 2022, it adds a non-conference game vs. BYU – a program that’s achieved a 21-4 mark over its last two campaigns. In cross-division play, the Cardinal is set to play all three of the top contenders in the South, at Utah, vs. USC and at UCLA. It’s also got Oregon and Washington – the big dogs in the North – on the road.

He took a step back last season. There were a few games where he recorded little to no statistics as a starter. Big lumbering Jett Johnson came in and ate his lunch for him, and then some.

It's really a Mike Leach issue.
