It’s really strange. The SEC used to be known for dominant defenses. Eventually it will get back to that IMO.

I think Odom seems to have a plan. If you don’t have an NFL QB on your roster then play coverage and let the offense make mistakes...give up the things underneath and gang tackle. Arkansas is doing this with no talent...we actually have a few studs, but most are hurt

Never understood the appeal of watching teams run the ball up the middle countless times a game. Much prefer seeing elite athletes do their thing in open space.

And I doubt D's will keep good spread-O's from scoring 30 to 40-plus any time soon.

I get what your saying but it does getting boring watching a game with no defense. Like the Bama Ole Miss game was boring to me. Really think some of the rules need to be curtailed back to the defense.

Star ratings are supposed to coincide more with how ready a player is to make an immediate impact in college. So Mac and CEH being 3 star guys who developed into great players over time isn't really a "miss"

Baloney.

The services whiffed on Jones AND Burrow AND CEH.

Got a link to that?

They gave up 600+ yards and 40+ pts against the last team with a pulse they played against.

Defense is dead. You have to force turnovers or hope for offensive penalties to stall drives.

Whoever makes the least mistakes on offense is probably going to win, when the talent levels are close to even.

I think we'll always have a lag effect where offensive scheme jumps ahead of defense, defense catches up, then offense jumps forward again. It's crazy to think less than 10 years ago the 2 best teams far and away leaned on their defenses.

Rules of the game have to change before they really come back. You have to realize that over the past 20 years nearly every rule change has favored the offensive.

Remember back in the day John Madden always ranting about how weak the game has become? And that was 20 years ago.. part of the reason why we don't have defensives is because they are handicapped by the games being made soft.

Think of it this way you can no longer:

1. Basically touch the QB, if you touch him you are going to get a flag.
2. You can barely touch the receivers anymore, that's a flag.
3. You can't really hit anybody anymore.. back in the day you think they had 5 receivers crossing the middle of the field all game? No, they would get decapitated back then.

Basically, the offense had a level of fear in them that prevented the wide-open play we see today, that fear is no longer there anymore. It's rare to see hard hits anymore.. we are basically watching flag football where passing is king..

I don’t think defenses will ever catch up. Not because offenses won’t be figured out, but because the rules are made for the offense and high scoring games.

Defensive players are handcuffed by rules favoring the offense, and inconsistent officiating from one play to the next.

No, those guys were both scholarship QB's at the two (UA and OSU) most dominant programs of the last decade. No one "whiffed" on them.

Two things that would help would be adopting the NFL rules for spotting the ball (ie. no more wide/short side split of the field anymore) and enforcing the 1 yd downfield blocking

Football still comes down to whomever has the best lines. Mac Jones was a 3* QB. Waddle and that OL is the difference. A stacked DL will still neutralize an O.

Nope very very sorry to say nope. Flag football is here to stay. Two stops a half is all one can expect. Coming from a Tiger fan who just watched every offensive record broken on the way to greatest season ever...... I dont like it.

Not as long as teams have stacked 5*'s at the talent positions on offense. You get someone like Waddle in space, and it just isn't fair to the defense

Their Defensive performance against LSU was similar to Georgia’s last Saturday. Playing genuinely good defense and still giving up 550+ yards and 40 points

Seemed that Bama did put up a brick wall and had a rushing attack that did eat the clock.

Rules have to change in order for that to happen. Particularly the linemen down field and the hand fighting/PI calls.

This is correct. With as far as offensive lineman can go downfield and defensive players being barred from hitting people without getting a personal foul the defenses are not being given a fair chance. Which may be the way they want it, I would prefer more defense like the old days but I may be in the minority on that

A&M has run over two consecutive SEC opponents with 12 and 21 personnel by pushing around undersized defenses. I think you’ll see a return to more power formations to wash out these smaller front sevens designed to stop spread passing attacks.

It’s what has long plagued the Big XII and Pac12 in Bowl season. They aren’t designed to stop power left, power right, inside zone and off tackle runs 30+ times per game.

Don't be silly. Of course the rating services whiffed on them. A 3-star QB is pegged to be a so-so talent in power-5 football. Burrow and Jones are elite.

Burrow likely had the best QB season in college football history. Jones now has as many 400 yard games as Tua had in his career - and has the highest QB rating in college ball.

You can add Mahomes to the list of 3-star ratings 'whiffs'. LOL
