Why was Jim Donnan never given another chance to coach in the conference?

He wanted back in after his time in Athens.

That 2000 team was predicted by many to be a national title contender. After Quincy Carter threw 5 interceptions in Columbia and UGA lost to a South Carolina team that was 0-11 the year before, the writing was on the wall.

My law school buddies who were UGA grads all liked him personally and had nice things to say about him sans his coaching ability.

He may have also succeeded in coaching them down instead of up. He did WAAYYYY less with way more than CMR ever thought about doing.

Maybe he didn't want to coach. He was a millionaire at that point, in 2000.

He still lives in Athens.

Who knows,as bad as things are with the state of the SEC coaches he just might get another shot.

He's pretty comfortable these days in Athens and I doubt he'd want to deal with all the BS that goes with
a big time job.

No, if you've heard him on the radio lately, he sounds senile. He can barely put sentences together. I hate it for him, but that's what age does to people. And whiskey. And being pounded in the head repeatedly as a football player in his younger days.

I'm assuming he saved his money...spends lots of time playing golf at ACC.

Not guilty with the Cam Newton defense.

But the business was a Ponzi. Fact.
Donnan doubled his investment.
Fact.
Investors lost over $27M.
Fact.
Donnan filed bankruptcy to repay over $5M back to victims of the ponzi.
Fact.

You can call that clean all you want. It is dirty without the jail time for a 70 year old man.

Hookers and coke?

Or the things that other 70 year olds enjoy like golf and grandkids.

First of all, i know the Donnan family personally. Coach is 100% a teetotaler and has been as long as I've known him.

Second of all i think he sounds fine on the radio. He has some insightful observations, some great stories, is funny as hell, and despite everything has remained loyal to UGA.

As a coach he was a good recruiter and an innovative offensive mind. He happened to be in the SEC East during the heyday of Fulmer and Spurrier. His results could not match his swagger.

The mess with QC left a stain, and there was some shady stuff with him and the president of Uga (under the table money). That probably hurt his prospects. Plus he was feisty with fans and the media and that didn't help his cause either.

But make no mistake about it, and take it to the bank, Coach Donnan does not drink alcohol.
