Looks like William Faulkner doesn't have as much an influence on Old Miss fans as you guys like to claim him to have...

Go take another Ritalin.

You seriously chose that part of my post to argue with? Seems like a poor attempt to divert attention from the point that I brought up. If Ole Miss is so pathetic and irrelevant then why waste your time posting in an Ole Miss thread? The only reason this thread was made was because fans of other schools continuously make ignorant threads about col. Reb, this thread was trying to clear up some misconceptions. So the bottom line is people apparently do care about our mascot issue, for good and bad reasons, and if you're gonna come in here just to spew a bunch of bullshite then just GTFO.

I found the OP to be a thoughtful explanation. I revile Ole Miss athletics but have the capability to be fair, and realize that Ole Miss like anywhere has fine people .

But, as someone who was educated with Mississippi's self-appointed elite (boarding school) and has lived for three years of my life in that state (business in Jackson), let me say that racism/elitism are intrinsic to the Ole Miss persona precisely because so many "Rebs" are still ridiculously insular and casually racist. It is the specific disease of the State of Mississippi and I don't see it going away any time soon. Although it is undeniable that it is improving.

I think the forced retirement of Colonel Reb was a historical inevitability, as he is a vestige of a mindset that is contrary to human progress. But he will die hard.

That's pretty harsh.

In big ten country, Ole Miss may be better known, but it's better known for bad things like the custom of the rebel flag, dixie, and colonel reb. Miss. State may be less known, but Ole Miss is known more for negative things. Most folks up here find bulldogs as not-negative and Miss State does not carry the dead weight of Ole Miss and it's integration history.

If Faulkner lived in Starkville, Ole Miss would be in worse shape.

You might enjoy my post on the Poli Board about Ross Barnett. It's completely his and the Board of Trustees fault as to how integration was handled at Ole Miss. Most of the Ole Miss administration was in favor of integration. Unfortunately, the university was used as a pawn by Ross Barnett and some members of the IHL Board. It's unfortunate Ole Miss paid the price for the awful actions of these people.

Ole Miss sucks.......always has , always will. The aristocrats of the Sigma Nu(Trent Lott),Kappa Sigma, etc. never liked the fact that Pete Boone and Robert Khayat were taking the University in the direction that ultimately led to the removal of the "Colonel". All is not well in Oxford

Ole Miss is fine. It will always be the premier institution in the state. Nothing's going to change.

You must not be listening to the backlash to the mascot change that i have been hearing. And you play into exactly what I am saying when you said"It will always be the premier institution in the state" and nothings going to change.

What exactly has the backlash been? And it has always been and will always be the flagship university of the state. Hell, it was the ONLY university in the state until 1958.

If the two schools stay on the same course they are right now for the next 10-15 years MSU will have the enrollment of the giant state schools in the SEC and Ole Miss will be the same smaller university it is today. That's going to have an enormous impact on athletics.

State is not that larger than Ole Miss, NIH. You do realize this, don't you? And no, MSU will not have the enrollment of a Tennessee, Georgia, or Florida? Where are all these kids going to come from?

State's enrollment on the Starkville campus in 2010-11 is 20,000 with plans on adding to that number for the next decade. Where are they coming from? Memphis, Texas, etc. State is trying to increase OOS enrollment by making OOS tuition waivers more available and recruiting students in these areas. Facilites like the student union, business school, dorms, have seen massive facelifts to make the school more attractive as well as the athletic department. Good facilities, quality education at a low price, and a school looking to make a splash on the field of play is going to contribute to the growth of MSU. OTOH the powers that be at OM and Oxford want the school to remain somewhat small as well as Oxford. Is that a bad thing? Definetly not. Ole Miss/Oxford is better as a smaller school/town than the alternative.

LSU saw a ton of growth in OOS enrollment which had a lot to due with the LSU name brand getting out with the schools' success on the playing field. Not that MSU is going to ever get to that level but more competitive programs will help get the school's name out.

I just don't see you growing a lot of OOS state enrollment. What's the attraction? How are you making the OOS tuition waivers available? Who's paying for that?

Also, according to statistics on the IHL website Ole Miss' Oxford campus is growing faster than Starkville. Ole Miss @ Oxford grew 7.1% this year while MSU @ Starkville only grew 5.6%. I think you need to rethink your prediction.

OOS waivers are given if you score a 24+ on the ACT and have a gpa of 3.0 and up. That gives you in- state tuition which is cheaper than most in state schools around the south. And on top of that State has more attainable scholarships. Paying 5-6k less than you would at OM is a big deal, ESP in this economy. Hence why I mentioned Memphis. Traditionally a ton of kids there go to OM as it's closer to home and easier to get into than UT. With OM making full OOS waivers harder to aquire MSU is picking up some of those kids.

Ole Miss never had to worry about growth...had a stream of students that wanted to come to the U..now that schools are competing for students the playing ground has changed and Ole Myth's answer is to change the mascot

Ole Miss has been well entrenched for decades with many prep schools in Texas, Georgia, etc. I just don't see them all of a sudden breaking with tradition and going to State.
