This is where I actually have to trash on my Sooners a bit.
Lots of t-shirt fans actually call it Oklahoma University. Okay, I can sort of understand that.
What I can't understand is when OU grads call it Oklahoma University. I mean, goodness gracious, learn the name of the school you attended for 4+ years.
Then you have national media calling us Oklahoma University. If you are going to cover the game, figure out the proper name.

Question: Why is Missouri’s mascot a tiger?
“Truman the Tiger” is the official mascot of Missouri. Named after President Harry Truman, his favorite food is “Jayhawk stew.” His most infamous moment came in the 2011 Independence Bowl when he broke the crystal bowl trophy.

Better question: Why aren't we calling MU "Methzou?"
I have two brothers who are meth felons and I don’t find this funny.

Nope, the Missouri Tigers were a Union home guard that were charged with protecting Union favoring Columbia from the rest of the area of central Missouri which was pro confederate.
As a result of the Tigers being there....Columbia was never attacked by pro confederate forces.

The Big 8 loved including these schools. Colorado is CU. Kansas is KU.
Decades before the B8. B8 had nothing to do with it. This is clearly an MVC thing. CU is the only anomaly and they joined much later. Few theories on why CU chose that name. Most deal with Denver being called DU.

Yes, we are Union
Technically the tiger militia kept both union and Confederate armies out. Columbia was neutral.

I've never once in my life heard an alumni or even a casual fan call it "Oklahoma University".

Yea, me neither. I don’t think anybody is really actually doing that.

I've never heard the national media call us "Oklahoma University" either. They just call us Oklahoma.

Missouri was a slave state that never seceded. Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware did the same. They were called the border states and still serve as a cultural barrier between north and south.

Upvoted. And thanks for the history lesson. I wonder about this sometimes: why OU and not UO? But UO sounds goofy and there's no changing it now

I have never heard a t-shirt fan or a talking head say this. Not saying they don't, just that I've never heard it

This is a "thing" that was way more frequent in the past.
"Oklahoma University" was something you heard quite often decades ago. Just like you heard OU called "The Big Red" frequently back in those days.
Seemed like there was a bit of rebranding starting in say the '90s. Now Nobody says "Oklahoma University" much anymore... and nobody calls them "The Big Red" anymore.
