Why is Gus Malzhan so bad at coaching in the 2nd half?

65 total yards in the 2nd half is a problem, but I don't know why. Go read the Auburn Board...they have a lot of thoughts on the issue.

I have always thought the offense is a gimmick . Teams adjust and dominate after the initial barrage.

Because he's a scared paranoid coach that plays to not lose.

Tricked up high-school offense. Good DC's stop it. Auburn's only hope is magic fairy dust, and that just isn't very dependable....plus they used the shite out of it

He's just spitting in the face of Jay Jacobs (AD) and the good ole boy network that Gus now hates. He's trolling us all. Plain and simple.

It's very scripted and that's why it works so well the first couple of drives (except for punching it in the endzone). Once a DC blows up that script then he's done for the game and has no answers.

He starts thinking about the All-Star Special at Waffle House and loses concentration.

I don't think it's as tricked up as it used to be. I've not seen every minute of every AU game this year, but I don't remember a single "whirly bird" pass this year. I do remember a trick play at the wrong against Clemson that resulted in an incomplete pass that killed momentum.

That said, I think teams have adjusted to AU's play-calling and there isn't that incredible athlete at QB that can turn Gus' lemons into lemonade. You had Cam or Marshall who could bail you out of a bad play call with their athleticism in AU's great seasons recently. Without that possibility - when it's all on the play call/play design - it's resulted in a very average product on the field offensively.

Gus scripts his first few series. However, he panics in game and reverts to a handful of plays he is comfortable with. Read option dive, screen, and bomb.

He almost never calls an intermediate pass over the middle, so linebackers are free to key the run game and safeties just have to make sure they don't get beat deep.

Gus makes defense easy by not using a huge portion of the field in his passing game.

His first 2 drives generally work. Once he is off script, he sucks unless our oline is able to simply over power the defense.

Eta: it works better with a dynamic running playmaker at QB, because the zone read can still cause problems if the QB can keep it and hurt you.

He scripts the first few drives pretty well, but after that he loses his mind.

His shell offense only works with a running QB. That's just the way it is.

Oh we adjust alright. We adjust to vanilla/predictable play calling.

I mean, its not even that though, especially this year. Second half, we stopped throwing the ball on 1st down, no play action on obvious run downs, not intermediate or short passes anymore. 2nd half offense is dive play, off tackle read, bomb on 3rd and long. The offensive play calling adjusts more than defensive calls do.
