Baylor used to have the bears in the stadium during games. but the state came in and said no more. I'm not sure bamas laws about having a non domesticated animal in a college stadium.

Baylor still has a bear on campus I believe. They wouldn't have to bring the elephant on the field. It could remain in the enclosure but be brought out for all the pep rallys.

Bama had an elephant back in 40's or 50's. Got too expensive to keep up. Seen pictures of it.

Alabama has had an elephant on campus for Homecoming as recently as 2003. But someone is going to get hurt if that animal is in the stadium. Some guy was injured trying to get into the cage one was being kept at during a Homecoming weekend in the 80s. I could see this being magnified with a permanent mascot on the sidelines. However, I have always suggested that a habitat with two adult elephants (they are social creatures afterall) be constructed on campus, along with a full-time veterinary staff. Though I could see the outrage by PETA right now.

I think memphis nailed it. The window for having a live mascot is closed.

Yeah and when it up and decides to trample the visiting team what are you gonna do? Shoot it with a rifle in front of 101,000 ppl and a national tv audience?

You have to admit- that would be a lot more exciting than "Sweet Home Alabama"....

Train it to attack at the first notes of "Rocky Top". Then feed it whatever it wants afterwards.

Why Doesn't Alabama Buy an Elephant

Because The University of Alabama and its supporters have evolved past the point of keeping a wild animal in captivity and demeaning it by using it as a mascot for a ballgame. We leave that type of behavior to the more uncivilized schools.
