re: Why didn't the other Pac 12 teams run the Washington defense against Leach?

Not to mention that TOP becomes important when you're scoring too fast.

TOP State 36:20 Ark 23:40

The air raid isn't a hurry up offense. Leach's defense has consistently ranked in the Top 30 in # of plays defended.

Just for fun, here's where each of those opponents ranked in Total Defense in the 2008 season and how TTU fared against them.

19. Ole Miss - loss
51. Texas - win
68. Oklahoma - loss
93. Oklahoma State - win

So Ole Miss was the only team with a good defense by that metric.

Yep, I was waiting for that. I'd forgotten when I wrote it.

Wrong. In its pure form it is very much a hurry up offense. ML may not trust this squad yet to go full hurry up but it is meant to be

So is it true that his teams usually control TOP? I've read that around here and just accepted that it was true.

Not sure about the TOP battle but in his and Hal Mumme's books they say the Air Raid is built on being hurry up. That was actually what made it all come together in its early stages.

If interested, check out the book called The perfect pass. It goes through Hal and Mike's evolution of the AR. Pretty good read actually

Cant believe the downvotes that facts get around here. Lmao

That day, the Iowa Wesleyan team filled the air with 54 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns. Mumme’s quarterback, who once threw 86 passes in a game, ran an offense that some coaches called “basketball on grass.”
Mumme split linemen wide apart, rarely used a huddle and ran plays in hurry-up, rapid-fire sequences. The coaches had a crazy idea: The quarterback, backs and receivers would have to remember only a handful of set plays and make quick decisions on the fly, as if on a playground.

4 games in at State and Leach's offense has led TOP in all 4 games. But a pick six or two only takes a few seconds off the clock and your back on offense

Like I said, new team, new scheme, new QB ect only 4 games in with a limited camp to install the offense with fine tuning.

Leach must not trust them to go no huddle at this time

So... You mean slightly better than what Mullen did at State?

Leach’s biggest problem by far has been KJ Costello. Costello came from a pro style in the Left Coast-12, but that's only part of the problem. Costello telegraphs all of his passes, allowing a defense to draw beads on receivers when he can get it there in time...which has been another problem. He isn't reading the defense at all. He has his go-to, and if not, he dumps it off to the RB in the flat, or underneath linebackers, or goes down....or throws it into coverage anyway.

He's been a train wreck for this offense and wasn't ready. I doubt he'd be suitable if he thought he was ready.

You're going to see an improved product with Will Rogers, if Leach wants a chance to win, or to even score. Rogers is familiar with this scheme and learned with Gardner Minshew. He also has some mobility, unlike KJ. The Vandy game should be a fresh start, the Alabama game doesn't matter right now.

Oregon did and lost 4 of the last 5. Leach doesn't have the offensive line he needs at State to execute his air raid

Or the receivers. It will take a couple years to really see how Leach can do. I think we have the QB in Rogers and RBs in Johnson and Marks. Need a few good WRs and 2-3 good linemen. Recruit a few out of HS and use Juco guys/transfer portal to plug holes until the new recruits gain experience

Watch FL this year. We have plenty of athletes on D and we run more zone than not.

And we're historically bad on D this year.

Not every team can execute a zone defense well. Take it from a Gator fan.
