When the SWC died, the leadership at Texas were very interested in going to the Pac. Texas put out feelers and was rebuffed. Cal and Stanford felt there were already too many state schools that were beneath them in the Pac. They felt that Texas wasn't academically strong enough to join.
If they had taken Texas back in the day, the Pac would still be alive. Hubris killed the Pac.

Because the media networks paying the conferences already have stuff in the 3PM Eastern timeslot and they'd cannibalize themselves, or fans don't want to show up at a game at noon any more than any other fanbase?

No one gives a crap about Arkansas-UK or Carolina-Vandy or State-Tennessee.
Some PAC12 AD's, on bad advice, believed their media rights were worth $15-20 million more (for each school) than they actually were worth.

Total arse hats... and they had a great season as a league this year.

It's honestly down to lack of give a frick by most if not all the PAC fanbases.
Makes sense
The NFL had to bribe LA to build a stadium and bring in a team
LA didn’t give a frick if they had a team or not

West coast college sports are not viewed the same as south eastern and mid western. Add in California and the northwest is batshit crazy as a region and their reluctance to embrace some of the southwest schools that could have kept them afloat and their situation became untenable.

Serious question
With teams like:
Washington
Oregon
usc
UCLA
Utah
Up and coming Colorado
Why were they no longer viable as a conference?
They had a team with a Heisman winner that couldn’t win shite.
Hence, the collapse.

Hubris and amazingly bad leadership.

That’s funny bc I read when the Pac 12 rejected Baylor and it was bc they were conservative and a religious institution. Then their conference went to shite. They deserved it.

Larry Scott and George Kliavkoff completely fricked up their media rights deals.
This is the easy answer but I disagree. Regional interest in west coast college sports declined dramatically in the last 20 years. The Pac commissioner didn’t have a marketable product to sell, leaving him with only 2 options:
1. Try to keep USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington happy by fighting like hell for a a tv contract competitive with the SEC/Big Ten, but risk alienating the networks and/or being last in line and with no money left, or
2. Admit the valuation gap and accept a payout in line with the seemingly inferior Big 12, but risk losing the name brand schools to the Big Ten resulting in zero remaining value and a conference collapse.
The bottom line is the Pac couldn’t survive without the Big 4 schools, and it couldn’t keep them without a nationally competitive tv deal. With the hand he was dealt, I actually think fighting for the big tv deal and hoping a network got desperate was the only move with a chance to save the conference.

I can't see a UCLA/Minn game drawing any more than a UCLA/Wash St game. When the SEC added Tex and OK they got teams that have very good TV ratings. Playing SEC teams will get them even higher TV ratings, I believe.
Most of the Pac 12 apathy was because their name brand teams didn’t have other name brands to play. West coast fans don’t have the loyalty the SEC schools have but they will care when Ohio St, Michigan, Penn St, etc play USC and Oregon. Even a small slice of the massive west coast market tuning in to Big Ten games is a win for the Big Ten. Not to mention the recruiting pipeline. And they only had to add 4 schools instead of 12 to own it.

Well said. Sometimes people are made scapegoats for outcomes outside of their control.

There's a funny story that emerged from the debacle where a Utah prof and the president on their own decided that the Pac was worth $50 mil/school. This was counter to the league consultant and the offer from ESPN (~$30 mil). Nonetheless, Kliakoff was directed to counter with the number. ESPN laughed, walked away, and that marked the end of the PAC although it didn't become official until months later.

GREED. NIL GREED is out of control and the University's GREED to keep bidding is putting extreme pressure on these schools to get into the superconferences and their huge TV contracts.
I hope this lesson on GREED is helpful with future changes that are coming and why they are doing it. The motive will always be the same. GREED.
