There seems to be a few teams excited about “dominating the Portal”. Is that really a good thing??

Imo, I think taking 12-15 portal guys for depth or replace starting production is great. But the red flag I see is teams bringing in 25 transfers or so into the program (with no coaching change). Why? Bc if you brought in 25 guys from HS, and 25 guys from the portal, you essentially have a brand new team EVERY YEAR. That’s more than half your roster (are we still limited to 85 scholarships or 105?).

How would teams get any consistency if you’re replacing half your team every year? Every year players will have to learn the offenses and defenses, and it’s a recipe for inconsistent play imo.

I think the best bet is to be picking up guys from the portal not for the next year, but for a couple seasons down the road. Relying on a transfer in his first year is like relying on a true freshman. There's a lot of learning that needs to happen and sometimes it may take all season.

I kind of think UGA struggled with that at RB having to rely on Ettiene (a transfer) and Frazier (a true freshman). I think we're starting to be okay now... but it took all season.

So what's the problem with bringing in 12-15 and being #1?

Quantity affects the ranking more than quality. I guess the talent average measure is more important imo.

For example, Tech is taking a lot of guys. But more than half were 3 stars in HS. They are top 5 in the portal. But I rather take LSU’s 12 guys or so that’s ranked lower vs taking the number 1 portal class of 25+ transfers if you’re following me. Then I don’t trust the new star system for transfers the recruiting sites made on the fly.

Then you have to acclimate about 50 new players to the team. Etc etc.

Ole Miss deserves to celebrate at least something.

Even if they don't.

A balanced approach is the way to building a sustainable program. If you're looking for a quick fix, fifth-year seniors from Division 1 or less prominent schools are the hidden gems in the portal.

Just depends on the transfer class, some teams are able to take 12-15 and still be ranked high in the rankings.

Looking at last year:

1. Ole Miss - 26 players
2. Oregon - 14 players
3. Alabama - 15 players
4. A&M - 28 players
5. Texas - 12 players

70% HS, 30% portal (give or take 10% or so for both percentages) is needed to field healthy rosters. I dont really like OM's method, nor Clemson's. There has to be a middle ground where common sense and productivity are intertwined.

Yes, but we had a coaching change for context. Elko has stated that was the one year he was going to take that many transfers to offset the transfers. We had to deal with 3 transfer windows open.

I think like someone mentioned above, you need transfers with 3 years of eligibility left to stick and develop vs one year of eligibility guys.

I still think HS recruiting + transfer portal recruiting need to be evaluated together. That’s how many guys you are truly replacing. Replacing 50 guys is crazy. Crazy time to be alive.

Portal has minimal effect in helping a team win more games especially if the culture already sucks at the school all the so called elite kids are going too. Qb pos may be different .

Dude was you not awake to witness multiple transfers win the Heisman trophy in recent years? Transfer guys have a higher chance than some 18 year old making an impact on your team being successful the coming season.

While some pre-dated the portal, you should take a look at the top QBs from the past 5 years or so. A lot of transfers:

Just since 2019:

Burrow
Daniels
Bennett
Nix
Penix
Dart
Fields
Hurts
Williams

I think 6 of the past 7 Heisman winners were transfers.

Get the best players you can (regardless of where they come from) and figure out from there. Players are a hell of a lot more important than scheme. And with an expanded playoff you have a little more room for error in getting the roster firing on all cylinders for a natty run.
