I wouldn't mind players getting paid for work off the field (what NIL was supposed to do) if it couldn't be leveraged for playing time or enrollment with a school. When it's used for recruiting, both during high school and after enrollment in a college via the transfer portal, then I think it ruins the sport.
I think you nailed it.
It isn't what NIL is in theory, it's what it's actually become — which it was never intended to do.

College football became top-heavy long before NIL. If anything, you'd think that it would increase the ability of schools like Aggie (lol) to compete... As well as Arkansas, and some of the other Top 20 most profitable programs in the country to help balance things out.
And no, I don't believe Arkansas will ever compete for a title in football... Our powers in charge don't care to play the game behind the scenes or hire the cut throat coach required to compete at a high level.

Because…. We want to believe that the players wearing our school’s uniforms actually care about the school and the state they are representing.
This is what makes college sports special. The schools that we are fans of hold a special place in our hearts. We want to know that the players we cheer for care too.
We don’t want mercenaries going to the highest bidder.
No one is against players receiving great benefits for playing. We all understand the sacrifices they make to play the sport. We just don’t want full blown professional football at the college level.
I have the Saints locally to cheer for at the professional level. I love LSU and the SEC for totally and complete different reasons. It’s more special to me and means more.
If you can’t understand this then you are dense as hell.

idgaf if anyone is or isn't paid. the only thing i care about is that the sport remains essentially unchanged on the field year in and year out. same expectations. same cycles off the field. etc. i don't want it turning into one and dones for sure. it would be ideal they could get paid and everyone makes out like bandits. i do NOT mind, oddly, that the suits that make it all happen take a pay cut to pay the players. they make -plenty- off of them, and it seems a fair exchange. just don't mess up our beloved sport. the passion in college football is the whole ball of yarn. anything that affects that does not have my personal support.

I don't think anyone is against the intent... but players aren't committing to a school as much as the money paid to them by those that don't need to be mentioned.
Plus, players can leave when they and there aren't any obligations.

Well said. I've always thought college football should feel like a more souped up version of high school football instead of being NFL lite.

Complete free for all. I’m not against players getting paid. I am against free agency year round.
Players should get paid with some kind of restrictions on always looking for highest bidder.

Because the every day fan will end up bearing more costs to an already overpriced product. Absolutely insane to pay taxes, club fees, tickets, parking, etc. Now just add NIL to it. Just will end up pushing more fans away from college football.

I'll explain it- you had the greatest product in sports (imo). Loyal and rabid fans. Played mostly by kids who wanted to attend that school. We want to believe they love our school as much as we do.
Now you've got annual free-agents. How many of last yrs A&M recruiting class signed because they love A&M? What was supposed to be "selling a jersey for pizza money" has turned into collectives who do nothing with a kids name, image, or likeness. They exist solely to entice players to come to their school. To most that is the exact opposite of what and why we love our respective teams.
Couple that nonsense with transfer-at-will rules and its a massive fail. The sport is quickly losing its romance.

Don't quite understand it.
Mike Leach was right about "fat little girlfriends" but he omitted all the other remoras feeding on the shark. The only reason to pay the players is to feed those downstream feeding off them. If you pay them, let the NFL start a farm system. If you do not pay them directly, pay them with a degree that the hangers on can not put cash in their own pockets.
NFL Lite = girlfriends, agents, posse, etc
College = degree + training + marketing passed though player only
#1 These are still kids
#2 Lots of predators whispering in their ears

I watch college football because it's special to me. The lack of "professionalism" in the sport made it fun. The more the sport acts like the NFL with free agency, agents or players demanding more money, etc., the less I like the sport.

You do realize both reward just a handful and greed is unchecked.
Pure capitalism
= Child Labor
= 60+ hour work week
= Unsafe products
= Unsafe working conditions
= No healthcare
= Company towns and company stores
= Hired "cops" to beat and kill workers
= No minimum wage
= No overtime
= Monopolies
I was raised by family who lived during this period and few living today would be strong enough to survive. Imagine a 6 year old kid working in a coal mine on a 12 hour day, 6 days a week and Black Lung before he turned 21.

Would you do your job for that compensation? I wouldn't, so why should I expect them to? I'm allowed to negotiate my salary, so why should they not be able to?

Ever watch the NFL? It sucks.

Access to Professional trainers;doctors, dieticians, tutors any time, etc

Not against them being paid a “reasonable” amount. When you get to 6 figures it’s out of control. They already live better than anybody on campus. If they think they have a right to make this money then quit school, go get a job and make plans to call your coach back telling him what a huge mistake you made.

Bc the majority of the posters here are old and grumpy, and that’s not how things were done when they were young.
Combine that with the fact that this is an overwhelmingly conservative board, and there’s nothing that conservatives hate more than any kind of change or progress

Actually this is incorrect
College players getting paid
Super Conferences
Rules violations
All this happened 100 years ago, the POTUS and Congress got involved and the NCAA was born.
