Who’s No. 1? Saturday’s Iron Bowl of Basketball set to be insane

SDS Article

quote:

Let’s make one point abundantly clear from the very start: The Iron Bowl is all about football. It always has been and always will be.

With that said, Saturday’s scheduled 40 minutes of intercollegiate basketball competition inside Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa could arguably be the most impactful single game of the 2024-25 season.

quote:

It’s Alabama vs. Auburn. No. 1 vs., well, No. 1.

The Iron Bowl of basketball.

Yes, Crimson Tide vs. Tigers will be the epicenter of college basketball when the teams tip off at 4 pm ET Saturday. Inexplicably, it will be only the 6th time in history that teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the AP poll from the same state play each other – joining Cincinnati-Ohio State twice (1961 and 1962), UNC-Duke twice (1994 and 1998) and Tennessee-Memphis in 2008.

And because it is classically Alabama vs. Auburn, the nation can’t even agree on which one is actually No. 1. The AP writers’ poll has the Tigers at No. 1 despite losing to Florida last weekend and the Crimson Tide at No. 2. The USA Today coaches’ poll has it reversed, with Alabama at No. 1 and Auburn at No. 2.

Want more examples that this iteration of the IBOB will truly be nuts? Ticket prices for Saturday’s game on the resale market are approaching Super Bowl levels. Want to sit behind the Alabama bench 20 rows up? Be prepared to shell out close to $2,800.

Best line of the article.

Although no trees are likely to be harmed Saturday and it is unlikely that fisticuffs will break out in the Coleman Coliseum stands, have no doubt that Round 1 of the IBOB (Round 2 is set for March 8 in Auburn) will be insane and certainly worthy of the Iron Bowl title.

It’s the biggest regular season game in SEC basketball history.

And it could end up being a footnote to the season finale @AU depending on how things go.

That said both teams still have losses on their schedule, Bama in particular so best just to enjoy it.

Both fan bases are nervous as hell.

It's going to be a great game. It will be a really good showcase of what SEC basketball has become. I can't wait to watch it.

If AU holds bama under 80 points, we win. Most likely not going to happen, but it's a nice thought.

Not much chance for Bama. Just hoping to keep it close.

It’s actually 1 vs 6. Still a big game for both programs though.

What’s Alabama like in the paint?

Florida beat us because they dominated Broome and we didn’t have enough left to keep up.

I just want a good game not marred by too many whistles. A 3 hour free throw fest with incessant stoppages for reviews would be a shame, but I almost expect it.

as physical as Auburn plays, why are yall surprised by how many fouls are called?

Its going to be a nightmare of a ref job. We just have to pray Shows and Adams arent there. But regardless, because Auburn is hyper physical on both ends, and Bama drives into the paint on close to 75% of their possessions. Both teams will have multiple players foul out. 50+ fouls. 75 free throws.

Sicko shite

It's a fun regular season game, but can't compare to the significance of a football regular season game. For most of the country (outside of Mulligan U.), regular season football games often decide who will be in the playoffs.

This weekend's game will have almost no bearing on postseason seeding. They could easily both end up as 1 seeds.

Honestly don’t know what to expect. Could be close, could be a blow out either way. Based on Bama's recent shooting performances I'm not sure it's rational to expect an away win, but this team has surprised me multiple times this year.

Hoping for an injury free non whistle fest

Yep everyone remembers LSU in 2007.

It's a well earned spotlight for both programs but in the end it's just a regular season basketball game. They're fun and matter for seeding and even conference titles but March is much more important.
