Urban didn't have to deal with peak FSU and Miami like Spurrier did.

Spurrier played Miami once from 1990-2001.

FSU was obviously stronger in the 90s, but they also weren't the dogshit team they are today. The SEC - in particular annual matchups - were much harder in Meyer's years:

If you look at the average SEC teams in both tenures:

UGA:
7-4 Spurrier
9-4 Meyer

LSU:
6-5 Spurrier
10-2 Meyer

TEN:
9-2 Spurrier
7-6 Meyer

ALA:
8-4 Spurrier
10-3 Meyer

You can kind of see why Spurrier had more SEC titles.

Can't be stressed enough.

Going with the OBC, his offenses were a thing of beauty.

And his brutal honesty/sense of humor. Coach, what do you think of this UK team this weekend?

"I hear they have a good punter."

He was spot on.

He also had to deal with them on the recruiting trail. It was hard as hell getting players out of South Florida when Spurrier was HC at UF. By the time Meyer took over they were neutered. I am not arguing which had it worse, but Meyer had a tougher conference road, while Spurrier had a tougher time in state to deal with. Now some of that can also be attributed to Spurrier's disdain for recruiting. By doing so he allowed FSU and UM to stockpile talent.

I’m going with Spurier.

He only won one national title, but he won more SEC championships and maintained a dominant program for a longer period of time. Florida was feared in the 90s by just about everyone. It was amazing.

Spurrier and it's not even close. Spurrier built the program and gave a shite about the school and things in general. He was in it for the long term success.

Urban used up programs for short time success.

If I was hiring and both were in their prime, it would be an instant decision.

He got Eric Rhett out of South Florida.

Emmitt Smith entered the NFL draft after his Junior year fearing that the new coach, Spurrier, would focus too much on the passing game to showcase his talents running the ball. In 1990 Spurrier turned to freshman Eric Rhett who would break Emmitt's career rushing record at UF.

Fun and Gun wasn't the Air Raid Smith expected.

We weren't winning squat when Spurrier was there though because we were wandering in the desert that was the Ray Goff/Jim Donnan era. Urban had to contend with decent Georgia teams for the most part in the East.

Another vote for Spurrier from me.

Funny because I used to hate Spurrier so bad in terms of his personality etc... but zoomed out, and 3x as old as I was then, I think Spurrier was the greater coach while at UF, all in all.

Florida went into that game undefeated and fully expected to win. Lots of people picked Florida to win and they were only 3 point dogs.

The way Nebraska dominated such a good team is part of the reason they are the GOAT.

Alabama and Florida have a bit of a SEC Championship game rivalry that started in the 90s.

They were always a team to take serious.

I agree. Best college team of all time.

Now I'll wait for the LSU fans to show up.

Say what you want but your program has been irrelevant since he left. And it all started with CUMs departure.

Why do you think he left? Talent gone, fake a heart attack, the blame for the decline goes to the next guy, genius!

Which half of the Bama titles do you question? 13 are voted on by the predominant polls of the time. We can stop there and still lap you.

I would say Meyer did a bit of that with his "power read" offense. Get a QB who is not afraid to run and can run you over. Was different than most of the read teams before who had a speedy guy like WVU

So he kind of changed CFB too

Spurrier. He has shaped all Gator fans attitudes and beliefs. He's much more relevant still than Urban. Maybe that changes if we put Urban in the ring of honor where he belongs

Very true. Amid all his health problems UAA should've forced him to have a succession plan. Another generational UAA blunder that doesn't get talked about nearly enough

Urban won two national titles in 6 years. Case closed.

Steve Spurrier never won less than 9 games at Florida. He has an offense named after him. In twelve seasons, he at least tied for 1st in the SEC East NINE times. He had 10 wins or more in nine of twelve seasons. And again, the other three were 9 win seasons. Spurrier won the east 75% of the time he was Florida’s head coach.

In Urban’s six seasons, he had three 9 win or worse seasons. He only won the SEC East three times. Meyer won the East 50% of the time versus Spurrier’s 75%. Meyer quit in the middle of the night becauae of Saban. Spurrier went toe to toe against Stallings at Alabama and peak Nebraska. He never faked a heart attack. And Spurrier didn’t have a serial killer on his team.

Spurrier wins this argument hands down. Not even that close really.

No one feared playing Meyer . Spurrier would beat you by 50.
