Who was OU bidding against when they extended Venables?

Were they afraid that Dabo would be fired after this season and that Venables would take the Clemson job?

They channeled their inner aggy when they did that one.
Also it's wild how Sooners & Aggies are essentially mirror images of each other now.

The only real source of hope is OU has a top 10 defense but their turnover machine at QB offsets that pretty significantly.

Venables not being successful at OU is a shocker to me. He was there with Stoops from the very beginning and watched how Bob Stoops turned that program around quickly. He could have just followed the same plan from back then. Granted, Stoops had a little more talent to work with that Blake left for him. They were able to shuffle players from defense to offense and vice-versa and bring in Josh Hueple at QB and it all just came together fast for them and the program was rolling again...They hired the best OCs at the time to complement the Defense (Mike Leach and Mangino)..
They are definitely going backwards now though. Venables makes Blake and even Charlie Strong look like good hires at this point.

Uhh negative on both cases...
Charlie Strong went 3 for 3 on losing seasons at Texas.
John Blake also went 3 for 3 on losing seasons at OU but did even worse
Venables has issues and has been wildly inconsistent but even if OU goes 5-7 or even 4-8 this year he's still better than both those fools.

No one knows why OU pushed for this extension. The OU President had stated something to the effect of having a defensive culture or something to that effect.
The OU President and board of regents are the only ones who know.
My guess is they’re worried about losing his defensive coaching experience.

The SEC is not the Big 12. OU did a good job of getting up for 2-3 big games a year and could coast through much of the conference on just fumes and good coaching. Well, coaching still matters but money is also a big part of success. For whatever reason OU is challenged on the latter so they need to get more out of their staff and their scouting. Whomever signed off on John Mateer needs to go back to scouting school.

Yeah, you're probably right, it's hard to make them look good. Blake was one heck of a recruiter though and would out do both Strong and Venables in recruiting any day. He had some real studs on his bench, but just didn't know how to use them. They were smashing everyone back then when Bob Stoops came along and took over Blake's team..Venables was just left with whoever Lincoln Riley did not want to take with him to USC or other teams didn't pick off from OU. It's a different time with the transfer portal now.

I will give Venables a pass if he fires Arbuckle this week and admits he cheated against Auburn since Arbuckle couldn't muster up any inspiring plays.

This is now the second time they've extended Venables before the season was fleshed out, and the team catastrophically imploded largely due to poor quarterback play...
At some point, you gotta wonder if it's just gross incompetence or intentional. Doesn't seem like the Admin is willing to listen to the fanbase. Trouble in Norman for sure.
Maybe we will become the next Nebraska; maybe we won't. But I can't confidently say that OU will be back, although I would love to.

I was willing to entertain the whole USC divorce back in the day; however, it's year 5. Coaches in the SEC are debunking that narrative in year 1. Sorry in advance that the RRS will, once again, be uncompetitive

OU will never be the next Nebraska, you will always have a foothold in Texas recruiting and recruiting in the South. Nebraska lost theres when they left the Big 12.
I think the big problem for OU is everyone else in the SEC outside of Texas, A&M and OU has a foothold in Texas recruiting now; especially, LSU, Bama, and Georgia. The studs that OU used to could cherry pick away from the Texas teams have a lot of options now that are equal to if not better than OU.. Texas and OU used to have the whole state locked down and could take the pick of the litter.

The seasons not over. Yall were ready to fire him last year after early losses to texas and Ole Miss. He then won at Tennessee and at Alabama and went 10-2 in the SEC. Can we finish the season first and see how it plays out?
