Here are a couple of exerps:
quote:
King: Nick Saban has become the definition of success in the sport of college football. Compared to Spurrier, I believe Saban is the obvious choice in a debate of who is the better coach
quote:
Nichols: what truly makes the "Head Ball Coach" better is his ability to transform any and every team he coached into a winning program. His offensive brilliance turned a formerly-mediocre team like South Carolina into a contender, while Saban has only been able to build on the more-than-solid foundations laid by Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings at Alabama.

Definitely Saban. He isn't done coaching yet. Likely he wins at least one more title.

Total nonsense to think Spurrier was better at this point. The Fun n Gun didn't really do jack shite at South Carolina. He had some really nasty defenses up there that made those teams good IMO. Football passed him by long ago. And this upcoming from someone who loves the OBC. He was great for the conference and the sport. He will be missed as a great coach and personality. Hopefully he finds a good TV gig.

This is retarded. The argument is ridiculous. It's obviously Saban. Saying that Saban has only been able to win championships at Bama is like saying Wilt Chamberlain only slept with a lot of sloots. Also, no mention of Saban's pre bama success? Do better

Probably Spurrier. Saban is to chicken shite to even try to attempt what Spurrier did. Saban needs a school to have past history to be currently successful.

This is an important topic.
I really don't understand the point of this thread. You're posting about a debate that was like a part of a class assignment.
Jesus Christ

To be fair, this is the offseason. Would you have preferred yet another rape thread?

I can't believe more than just a couple outliers actually think Spurrier is better. Y'all are effing nuts. There is no one better than Saban at building a program. He got Michigan St playing good football (similar to spurrier at Duke). He turned LSU into a monster (similar to Spurrier at Florida). Both failed as NFL coaches. His last choice was vastly different. He returned Alabama to dominance in one of (arguably) the greatest coaching runs in coaching history. Spurrier's heights at South Carolins include 0 SEC or national titles. I think it is close to lunacy to analyze these two and conclude that Spurrier was a better coach. Probably a top 5 or top 10 all time coach but he is not better than Nick Saban.

I just want to say that I am shocked, I mean SHOCKED that there is a thread that you don't understand.
Yes, I'm questioning your intelligence if you can't figure this post out.

If you consider building programs a better indicator of coaching ability then you should pick Spurrier over Saban.

Spurrier's entire legacy hinges on what he did at Florida in the 90s. While impressive, the SEC of the 1990s is not the SEC of the 2010s. Many programs within the conference had fallen on hard times. LSU was a disaster, Auburn was mediocre for much of the decade, and the same can be said for Georgia. The only consistently good teams in the conference during this time were Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. Funnily enough, these were the only schools to win conference championships in football during that decade.
While Florida thrived in a weak Southeastern Conference, they consistently struggled against Florida State. Spurrier left the Gators with a losing record to Bobby Bowden's program. There were years in the 90s where Florida would be tops in the conference but would also be the third best team in the state of Florida (behind FSU and Miami).
Spurrier will always be considered a legend in the sport, but for all of his greatness, he only managed to win one national championship. And that championship was given to him as a mulligan to boot.

"Dating back to the 2000 season at Florida, Spurrier is 3-1 against Nick Saban’s teams. Florida crushed LSU in the 2000 and 2001 seasons, 41-9 and 44-15 respectively."

I do consider program building a major factor in coaching comparisons. I just think people are selling Saban way short on this point. Spurrier took tough jobs and should be commended for it. But that does not make him a better coach. It just doesn't.

Saban never lost to Mike Dubose twice in the same year.

LSU wasn't exactly glittering with trophies when he arrived there.
