Auburn had the much tougher schedule and won against a common opponent.

Auburn should have been awarded the title.

If anyone has a claim over Auburn, it's Texas, but they lost in the last game and as we all know, losing late = death knell, at least in the old days.

People were legitimately saying that Nebraska team was the best team in College Football history. When Miami beat them the voters didn't look at anything else. They thought of Miami beat the supposed greatest team ever they must be National Champs.

It's surely as legit as Bama claiming 1941.

From the graphic, Texas looks to have an equal complaint.

Both AU and UT looked better against better competition

Except Texas lost to Georgia in the Cotton Bowl. They lost at the worst time.

No, Auburn finished 3rd in both recognized major polls at the time. There’s not really a case to revisit the verdict informed voters made contemporaneously . Good season, but not a championship one the way it played out

Close loss after a great year. Still a strong resume.

Miami played like shite against several teams they should have run off the field.

Au lost to TX by a lot.

I think in terms of résumé, it’s Auburn 1 and Texas 2.

However, the Texas 13-point win @Auburn would seem to be an edge for the Horns.

Auburn would say that they beat Georgia, who in turn, beat Texas.

Texas also lost by a single point.

Many variables at play. Here’s how I see it:

1. Auburn: 4-1 v top 10, 5-1 v top 25 (loss by 13 at home to Texas)
2. Texas 3-1 v top 10 (loss by 1 v UGa at Cotton Bowl)
3. Miami: 1-0 v top 10, 3-1 v top 25 (loss by 25 @ Florida)
4. Nebraska: 1-1 v top 10 (loss by 1 @ Miami)

I give Auburn an edge because bowl games mattered back then, and Texas should have closed the door against Georgia. Blind résumé might almost favor Texas.

*Texas beats Auburn
*Miami beats Nebraska
**Auburn beats UGa, who beats Texas
**Auburn beats UF, who beats Miami

One of the funnest years to debate IMO. It’s up there with 1984 and 2000.

I was born that year but without researching and basing on opponents I'd say Auburn. Also Auburn did better against the 3 common opponents.

The consensus was the Nebraska would be Champions and probably so.

I was really happy and excited about the outcome for Miami. They were relatively unknown on the big stage and this was before they became bad boys. However, right after, I remember Sports Illistrated had Auburn on the cover and made the case for them. It convinced me.

I agree; one of the few seasons where a fun debate takes place deciding who should have won it.

Should've been Auburn. Auburn has been screwed a few times at the end of the season.

If this were Alabama in '83, they would be claiming to be National Champions.

Even with the loss to Miami, Nebraska was still the best team in '83 and probably still deserved the title of you're looking at it 30 years after the fact.

The Orange bowl was a weird game and Nebraska could have tied it with and extra point and taken the title with a tie. They decided to try and win it on the field. On the 2 point play a Miami player hit the ball with a finger tip moving just enough for the Nebraska player to not make the catch. Tough way for a title to slip away.
