I don't claim it. The school claims it. I think most Alabama fans who know anything about that title thinks it bogus. Why our SID decided it was a good idea to claim 1941 is beyond me.

You also claim things for Bama that were vacated but not for other programs.

We were the best team and played the toughest schedule in the country. We got fricked. We should be National champs from that year.

Nebraska was the best team.

People forget that Florida had national championship caliber teams in 1984-85 but the period gets overlooked due to probation. Had those not been probation, that’s possibly a back-to-back national championship, assuming everything played out the same. And this was before Spurrier.

BYU still wins in 84 since we would've been forced to play in the Sugar Bowl. And shitting the bed against UGA after the AP voted us #1 ruined 85.

I personally do not. I'm fairly certain I am on record multiple times on this very forum saying that forfeits and vacated wins are bogus, no matter which program it is. I also am 100% certain I have acknowledged the Florida Gators as SEC champions of 1984 despite it being "vacated."

Sure, if you think it's better where #1 can't play #2. Or even #3. Or even #4.

This is a weird argument for 1983. There were 4, maybe 5 teams that could claim a top spot when all was said and done. The team you thought was number 5 finished number 1. Rankings are irrelevant when the people doing the ranking don’t know what they’re doing.

It’s similar to the committee.

I’ll die on the bill that 1983 Auburn getting the shaft for Miami is one of the more indefensible choices voters have ever made. It was a completely emotional decision and I’m fairly certain any retroactively applied computer ranking worth its salt would back up that opinion.

Texas vs Auburn should have been the debate, and I think losing later in the season tends to carry a little more weight with people, including myself, and Auburn had a harder overall schedule than UT, so Auburn ought to have been the choice between those two in my opinion. Whether or not that’s fair is a legitimate debate. Miami just didn’t have the SOS to warrant the voters giving them the nod over Auburn, that isn’t a legitimate debate at all.

Well the media drove the Miami angle much like they tried to with Boise State a few years back. It was a perfect storm for that team and they won a fluky game over the superior team but in no way should have been awarded the natty. If I remember correctly, Vegas had Nebraska as an 11 point favorite and had Auburn, Texas, UGA, Florida, and Michigan as neutral site favorites over Miami which basically meant Vegas had Miami aa 8th or 9th best team. Nebraska had the best overall team and Auburn played the 4th hardest schedule in NCAA history. Texas could make a claim as well but I think the best outcome would have been a split between Nebraska and AU in my opinion.

The 1893 Champs were clearly the Princeton Tigers.

If we’re allowed ifs and buts, I’d like to submit if the Donald doesn’t sweet talk #34 and he stays for his SR year it’s UGA.

Hook'em

This is a fun blast from the past.

This was the last gasp of DKR Texas football. Akers had the same fate as Gary Gibbs and Frank Solich . . .doing good stuff but not doing well enough to replace a legend and then watching his succesors tank the program.

Akers 84 season was a total disaster so maybe he deserved to be canned.

How so? You lost to an objectively worse team in Georgia in the cotton bowl

Absolutely right that Galen Hall's UF teams of 1984-5 were national caliber good.

As for AU not being considered or playing for NC in 1983, they likely were adversely impacted, at least in perception, by the blow out loss to Nebraska at AU in 1982. That 1983 Nebraska team was largely the same squad that beat AU in 1982 and was the best team I ever saw play in Auburn.

That's not why they didn't play each other. Auburn as SEC champ had to play in the Sugar while Nebraska as Big 8 champ had to play in the Orange.

Nebraska was being hyped as the greatest team of all time, so when they lost, it was easy to vote for the team that beat them.

I didn't make that graphic. I'm simply passing it on. However, I personally acknowledge Florida's 1984 title because it was won on the field.
