At this time last year I knew UT had Ewers as their starter and Manning as their backup.
This season I have no idea who will trot onto the field if Arch goes down.
Does anyone here know?

Auburn and LSU both have coaches who wanted to cash that last contract before hanging it up.

Napier
Venables
Freeze
Kelly
In that order.
UF has no depth in their QB room and Florida is expecting Napier to take a big step forward. A QB injury with that schedule could be a death sentence.
OU was so snake bit with injuries that no one really knows how good Arnold was. If Mateer isn't an upgrade and injuries aren't a problem it really shows Venables' ceiling is as a great coordinator.
Freeze is in a similar boat as Venables, but Auburn's buyout will mean he will still get paid. Freeze wins either way.
If Nuss's decision making doesn’t take strides over last year, LSU isn't making the CFP, and there is no excuse for that considering the talent LSU brought in with the money that was earmarked for Underwood. Kelly might have to donate another $1M to LSU NIL to keep the baws off his back going into Year 5.

For the season its close between Sark and Smart. Either could have a natty in January if Manning or Stockton has a better than average season or could lose 3 regular season games if they don't.
I think its clearly Sark between the two. If Manning is good Texas will contend for a title. If not, they won't.
Contrast that with Georgia. Beck was great at times last year and we all know he is capable of playing like a top QB. But he was also under fire often with that OL, which lost arguably the best 2 or 3 players on it. Georgia has all the talent in the world and I'm sure they will have a good defense, but y'all are replacing something like 7 starters, many along the front 7. Your defense was great last year, but a step down from the dominant units. Gotta have some young guys step up.
Point being on Georgia, there are a lot of things that can potentially cause you guys to lose games. I don't necessarily think they will, but with Texas it really is just Arch.

I say Hugh Freeze. How Jackson Arnold plays this season may determine the rest of Hugh Freeze’s coaching career. If Arnold plays well and Auburn has a winning season, Freeze likely gets a raise and/or contract extension. If Arnold bombs and Auburn has another losing season Freeze will find himself unemployed
Why? Is this the same coach who won so much at Ole Miss? His teams have played terribly against even inferior competition over the last two seasons. If I honestly thought all that rested with the QB position, I get it.
The hard truth is that huge Freeze needs to coach this team better, and whatever he's got left, better show up on the scoreboard.

Auburn fans have laid all blame for the last two seasons at the feet of Payton Thorne and Bryan Harsin. They have given Freeze a pass.
If Arnold struggles this year, a lot of fans will start to wonder instead if the problem isn’t the QB but the coach. If Auburn doesn’t get decent QB play, they won’t be able to get the ball to their most skilled players. That will mean they have another disappointing year. And three disappointing years in a row will be the end of the Freeze experiment at Auburn. With all his off the field baggage and his lackluster coaching resume it will be hard for Freeze to land another P4 head coaching job if he is fired at Auburn. If Arnold struggles this year Freeze likely will get fired and finish his career as a coordinator or head coach at a lower level. How Arnold plays won’t just dictate whether Freeze gets another season at Auburn, it likely dictates the direction his whole life goes from here.
That is why.

Pittman and Green.
Zero improvement at QB = Pittman doesn’t make it to the end of the season.

Even Barner fans are smarter than that? Receivers need to start catching the football, and both sides of the LOS need to play harder and smarter. One more player gets thrown under the bus in one of his ridiculous pressers, I'd fire him on the spot.

Three guys fighting for the backup role.
1) Senior Matthew Caldwell - Transfer from Troy
I have no idea if this guy is any good, but he has at least started 10+ games in his career. He actually had some decent games last year (on paper).
2) Redshirt Freshman Trey Owens
Looked good in the Spring game last year, but that's the only time I've really seen him other than some practice clips here and there.
3) Freshman KJ Lacey
He enrolled in December, so he does have a full Spring learning the offense, and he probably has the most talent of these 3 guys, but would he be ready? Idk.
Next year, Dia Bell or KJ Lacey will be the answer if Arch sticks around for another year.

Completely false …. we’ve laid 100% of the blame on Harsin.
But that time has passed , … now it is 100% on Freeze, no excuses.

Smart may be the safest coach in the country..do you even pay attention to CD FB? Seriously..honest question because you absolutely cannot and think Smart is on the hot seat...Wtf is wrong with you.

No, many are not. Most here blame Thorne and Harsin for last season.

Nothing is wrong except he can read the thread title.
Having a lot riding on their QB's doesn't mean hot seat, it means they have a lot riding on those two players this year. The QB position could make or break a title year.

SS with Arch
If Arch is great, that could only turn up the hot seat on Sark - given Texas doesn't win it all. And especially if Texas loses championship games due to West Coast play calling.
If Arch is a bust, then fans will not reflect that on Sark at all - because we were all pulling for Arch. Sark gets a free pass if Arch is not the goods.

I know, but when you say here, it's just not the real world. I'm less than an hour from the Plains, and they are not happy with the product. They may be on the other side, but they know football. Coping is about what is expedient, and Thorne is history. Year 3 is gonna say so much around these here parts.

I would say Venables and Mateer but he also relies on the entire offense and OC to not lay a turd.
My guess is either Freeze/Arnold or Sark/Manning.

Kelly deserves consideration here.
If Nuss gets hurt or lays an egg, LSU easily could lose 4-5 games, after investing heavily in the portal. There is a good deal of talent, but a gap at QB after Nussmier.
Kelly has underperformed for three years and opens with Clemson at Clemson.

I think Kelly’s success will revolve more around offensive line. They have four new starters. Even with 3 NFL draft picks last year they had no running game.
If LSU has no running game AND can’t keep pressure off of Nuss they will have a long year. The LSU offensive line will determine whether they go 8-4 or 10-2.
