6-ish.

I hate to admit it, but the number one team in 2004 was probably the ones who won it all, but it did suck that Auburn did not get the chance to win or lose on the field.
Don't be dumb son. Look at the whole season instead of one game.
Also, they were cheating.

One wonders how much success LSU or Tennessee would have had if they shared a state with another major program that received the majority of state support for the bulk of their histories.
Particularly LSU. How would their record be different had they shared a state with a program of Alabama's caliber?
I don't lump UGA and UF in there exactly because they have GT and FSU to contend with.

You can rank them how you want, but we are definitely in the same tier...

Georgia has 1 (1980). Your 1942 claim resides at Ohio State.

Should also be noted that AU has traditionally faced the most difficult SEC schedule by win% in just about every decade as far back as you want to look. We also have beaten Bama head to head in a couple seasons in which both teams had one SEC loss and Bama was awarded championship because they had one more conference game against Vandy.
Fairly remarkable AU has the record they have playing Bama, UGA, UF, UT, GT every year for decades.

"In 1942, Georgia Bulldogs were the consensus national champions, defeating UCLA in the Rose Bowl on January 1st, 1943. Ohio State was crowned #1 in the final AP Poll at the end of November, but did not make a bowl appearance. At the time, the AP poll did not put out a post-bowl poll."

Most definitely. But the cheating was certainly paying dividends that year.
But honestly, USC was a damn strong team that year.
Edit. Again the point stands that Auburn got hosed that year. If we had the same system then we do now, I don't think there is much chance OU would have been in that game.

Anywhere from 3rd to 6th, depending on the variables you want to use.
I'll say this, even though many might disagree: because of Auburn's 2004 season, combined with OU's pasting in the NC, I'd argue it gave the benefit of the doubt to SEC teams "on the bubble" in the future IMO...in other words, if it wasn't for AU '04, it's possible UF and/or LSU would've been passed over in later years, so give Auburn some thanks for getting the opportunity to add to that trophy case, lol...

Historically? About 5th, below Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, and Florida - about dead even with UGA.
Recently? 4th, below Alabama, LSU, and Florida.
VERY Recently? 2nd, due to being the only team not named Alabama to win an SEC title in 3 years, or a national title in 8.

6th. You could make an argument for 5th over Georgia. I don't include A&M or Mizzou yet.

No AP, no title, unless you won the UPI but that wasn't until after 1950.
Not every conference sent programs to bowls in consecutive years like the SEC did. Just because UGA received several selectors, they didn't get the one that mattered, the AP.
You're still at 1. But keep trying to grasp.

LSU : 9-9 vs Alabama, 9-8 vs Florida Florida : 2-7 vs Alabama, 8-9 vs LSU
1. Alabama 2. LSU 3. Florida 4. Auburn 5. Georgia
Good post SofG.
If you go by NCs and Head to Head Bama is #1 since 2000.
I was just basing my rankings on LSU being #1 in the SEC since 2000 more on criteria that no SEC team has accomplished, EXCEPT LSU:
1. LSU is the only SEC school to have a winning record every year since 2000. 17 consectutive seasons. And 11 of those 17 were 10-win or better seasons, 5 were 11-win or better.
2. LSU is the only SEC school to go to a bowl game every year since 2000, winning 10 of the 17.
3. LSU is the only SEC school in the Top 5 in victories, and if you google "best college teams since 2000" - LSU is #4 in the nation in just about all of them, behind the usual suspects: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Boise State/USC depending. Florida, Bama, and Auburn are in the Top 10 in some of those polls.

LSU and UF has had a history of being lost in the desert for 40 years. Prior to Spurrier and Saban, both programs underachieved for years. I equate it to Miami, had some great runs with the right coach, but those coaches were few and far between.

Lost in this entire thread is the "unconscious need" for most schools in the SEC to rank Auburn as low as possible.
Why?
Because Auburn has accomplished more than any other team has in this conference (given the limitations we have to work with).
Auburn is not the state school.
Auburn's in state rival is the most successful program in NCAA history.
Auburn is a land grant institution.
Despite all of these limitations, we are still entrenched with 5 of the big 6.
That is a major threat to schools like LSU, UT, UF, and Georgia who have nothing but the best $$, name recognition, and high school coaches working "for them" in recruiting. Statistically, they are almost even or below Auburn.
That is also a major threat to all the "other state schools" who have not been able to succeed like Auburn. Looking at you Ole Miss, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mizzou. Statistically, they are light years behind Auburn.
Finally, it is a threat to all the other "land grant" schools that want to use excuses for their lack of success. Looking at you Texas A&M and Miss State. Again, not on Auburn's level.
Frankly, no one wants Auburn to succeed. Not the media and not ANY other SEC school. Because Auburn's success is a direct threat to their fans contentment with their own program. If Auburn has one more undefeated season and wins the SEC and Natty, we are a clear #2 in the conference. No team can live with that thought. It eats at them. Other teams are fine with Florida success because they can make excuses like "If we had that much in state talent"..... (you can repeat this with any other Big 6 member except Auburn). When Auburn succeeds, everybody looks for a reason to justify their inadequacy.
To summarize....Auburn knows you hate all hate us and we don't care. It just makes us laugh at your pain every time we have another magical season.
Here's to 2017! Maybe another SEC/BCS title???
