On the whole, it's a good city to be in right now. Food, music, breweries, and the bar scene have really grown.

But some of the city is dangerous as hell. 100 out of 111 homicides (roughly 90%) were in two general areas - west of 65, or in an arc from about 4 blocks north of the civic center east to Gate City.

Even the huge expanse of Huffman, Zion City, and all the Roebuck neighborhoods, geographically larger than all of the downtown/southside area, saw just 3 of those. It's amusing, because white people here will tell you that whole area is a war zone.

The total murder rate is definitely up. As places like South Avondale and South Eastlake have gentrified, the run-down neighborhoods, particularly west of 65, have become more violent.

But recently our dumb politicians catered to USMs whining so now their Tennessee Tech level stadium is added to the rotation....

When half the state is nowhere close to ether msu or ole miss is makes complete sense why it was moved. If I have to drive 5 hours to fricking Starkville I would be pissed too.

Little while? You must be young, it was at legion field for longer than its been rotating. It's almost a guarantee they'll move back to Birmingham again after the new stadium is built

My high school played for the 1994 state championship at home in Alabama. It wasn't long after that they moved all the Super 6 games to Birmingham.

Alabama had a strange high school alignment back then as well. 4 teams in an "Area" and two of them made the playoffs. There was a 1-9 team that made the playoffs one year in our area. Team A went 3-0 and the other three teams went 1-2, the team that went 0-7 outside of the area won the tiebreaker.

Thats the way Jackson is as well. There are parts of town that you just don't go.

The biggest difference in Birmingham and Jackson, and I have lived in both areas is the give a damn is much higher in Birmingham. The general public, the community, the churches - all want to see Birmingham succeed, so you get a revival of some sorts in the city. Also, many of the nicer suburbs in BHM (Hoover, Vestavia, Mountain Brook) are all in Jefferson County, so there is some shared resources.

In Jackson, everyone is trying to get out. Churches have abandoned beautiful buildings to build in the suburbs. Businesses cant leave fast enough. No one wants to live downtown. There are a couple of pockets where gentrification is trying to flourish, but all the suburbs are in a different county (sans Clinton), and the tax base is not in Jackson.

There is no middle class in Jackson. There is the extremely wealthy that have held on in Northeast Jackson or the extremely poor that can't pay their water bill on time and have crippled the city's resources.

As for Veterans Memorial Stadium, its not in the worse part of town, but its a stadium that hasn't seen any major renovation since the 80s. Its just not very nice. Its historic and is worth checking out, but it should not be hosting any games of importance ever again, and that includes high school state championships.

Very familiar with how Alabama works. They put all the emphasis on area games but none on non area games. They still have 4 team area pods for sports like soccer that take 2 teams in which is kind of hard to believe. But for football they have expanded since your time. But still my HS made the playoffs every year even the years I didn't think they were any good. It just so happened to be that the area that they were in sucked so they would find a way in.

In Tennessee that would be Cookville, population 32k and located 80 miles east of Nashville or 80 miles west of Knoxville. It is also about 90 miles north of Chattanooga and 280 miles east of Memphis.

Tennessee Tech stadium with capacity of 16k host all nine title games.

Prior to 2009, it was held in Murfreesboro...which is the geographic center of the state of Tennessee.

Can’t agree with this enough. Sure the kids play in SEC stadiums, but it’s lame not seeing the stadium full.

Went and watched them in Birmingham for alabama a few years ago and watched the Mississippi class 5a a couple of years ago in Oxford. Wow Vaught-Hemingway is bad. USM’s stadium looks just as good as Vaught. Couldn’t believe how bad it was. Also though USM’s campus was better than Ole Miss. Really underwhelmed by Oxford. Not a flame, Ole Miss’s campus and stadium just didn’t seem like an SEC school. I’ve been to Auburn and Tuscaloosa and they’re leagues ahead of Ole Miss. Would like to watch a game in Starkville. On TV, they’re stadium seems like it’s got more of a high school atmosphere, in a good way. It’s one of the few stadiums I can truly hear the crowd during the game, not just the cowbells either.

Tucker Stadium in Cookville is the perfect size. Why play it in a much bigger, but much emptier stadium.
Because 16k wouldnt be enough to host our games?

The top classifications in LA will average about 25k for the state championship

Actually they rotate between the San Antonio, Houston and DFW.

Wrong. There is no set rotation; the site goes to the biggest bidder, which lately has been Jerryworld in Arlington.

Atlanta (would be nice to put it in the CENTER of the state), but they need to put ALL playoff games BACK on the school fields like they used to!

Canton- Hall of Fame
Massillon- Paul Brown Tiger Stadium

They rotate. One year, Canton gets 4 games and Massillon gets 3. The next year, Massillon gets 4 and Canton gets 3

Meh, I just remember it used to be held at one of the team's home field. Last one my school won was '93 5A. I was like 10 and remember it being a long fricking ride from Oxford to Greenville.

In Tennessee they put the sites up for bid so money has a whole lot to do with it....When I was coaching it was played at one of the playing schools home field. Then they went to a central site in the early-mid 80's and played it at Vandy stadium. It was held there for many years and was a good place to hold it with plenty of hotels and restaurants....Vandy then took out the artificial turf and went to a grass field and the TSSAA didn't want to take a chance on playing several games over a 2 day period on a wet muddy field...They moved from Vandy to MTSU who has turf and then a few years back Cookeville won the bid and IIRC they just signed a new contract with them last year. Vandy has since gone back to field turf and I'm not sure if they put in a bid the last time the contract came up or not?

I'm not really sure. I just got some new Beats headphones and wanted to get a pic of a dude wearing them.
