Dumb comment is right. I've been watching college football since late 60s. Several decades since then the SEC wasn't the top dog conference that it is now. Big10, pac 8, big 8,and SWC were all as strong or stronger than what was then I think a 10 team SEC conference.
If SEC was always this grand powerhouse conference, then how has Texas been able to hold winning records on all but Vanderbilt and SC?
Edit: Got sidetracked. Vegetables has got to be on hot seat now. He loses one more to Texas next year Oklahoma AD will finalize interviews. I'm sure he's making preliminary inquiries now and making his list of candidates.

OU, much like A&M, uses Texas as there one of the benchmarks for success or failure. Win, and a lot is forgiven, lose, and the seat gets hotter.
Lose ugly and you get the torches and the pitchforks.
Venables has been the OU HC for 3 years, starting in 2022.
Here is a list of the most points given up by Oklahoma to Texas in any given four year stretch of TX/OU games (does not include the Big 12 CCG meeting):
1. 2020-2023, 172
2. 2019-2022, 169
3. 2018-2021, 168
4. 2021-2024, 161
2018-2021 was Lincoln Riley, who left the OU defense in shambles.
Even w/ the transfer portal, BV has not changed the narrative.
Against Texas, 3 of the worst 4-year defensive performances in OU history have come on BV's watch.
Granted, if OU had an average offense, the numbers might change some.
But BV is the Head Coach, so its all on him.

DG left because HE wanted to leave to be closer to home. No one ran him off.

I liked this thread better last week when it was entitled "Red Skull Venables on the Hot Seat"

Can we not rush this please? The OP is an Aggie, and many responders are Longhorns.
Let OU worry about this - we want to keep Venables as long as possible.

He seems like a generally good guy from his press conferences. He answers the questions posed with grace when another coach would have blown up at the asker. "Did you consider making a change at QB?" "What does Texas at #1 mean to the Sooners?"
The allegations over sign-stealing are troubling...
Anyway, Venables just got an extension. I doubt they fire him anytime for at least 2 years. They're more likely to clean house on the offensive side and hire some stud OC and give him carte blanche on his side of the ball.

He will get a chance to fire the OC this year and their schedule is much better next year
He’s one of theirs so he will get more time
This week is big. He has to win this game.
I still think they go 8-4. Their offense will figure it out once they get healthy

I engaged in some schaudenfraude and listened to a few Sooner podcasts after the RRS. A few of their talking heads actually don't their offense will get better this year based on the patchwork oline which isn't made of developed high school players, but seems to have a lot of transfers/portal guys.
They also think Hawkins has been mentally damaged by being coached too much to avoid turnovers which is why he isn't making throws when he thinks there's the slightest risk. A few think Jackson Arnold is gone so they can't go back to him although they feel he is more versatile and a better passer than Hawkins.
They really want OU to make a good hire at OC and make a clean cut from the Air Raid and Veer and Shoot offenses. It may be a good idea if OU can hang onto this year's recruiting class which has some highly rated linemen. Regardless this is a rebuild.

They would have had a better chance running the wishbone this past Saturday.. the offense they ran out there was downright terrible..
The only thing they did good was throw the ball away.. literally..
So if you are Oklahoma.. which OC would you hire to fix the offense?
Brennan Marion would be interesting.. but he probably wants to move into a HC role next.

Mike Shanahan of James Madison University was mentioned. He runs a lot of RPO.

He's been 6-7, 10-3, and 4-2 so far. The expected trend line this year isn't good but I doubt he is fired anytime soon and if he is, I don't think he would drop right down to a coordinator job.
Venables is from the Bob Stoops, Bill Snyder line. He would be a candidate to be HC for many schools in the Big 12, Big 10 footprint, and maybe some ACC schools would consider him interesting because of his successful time at Clemson.

Hopefully not until having a good defense becomes part of the culture and not an anomaly.

BV needs a QB. They should look and see if the one at Oregon would consider transferring. He's so much better than the 3 garbage QBs on their depth chart now.

Not yet. He gets at least another year or two to prove his SEC chops.
Objectively, this season was not expected to be a great one for OU.

Wasn't expected to be great, but we at least expect to be competitive...the offensive coaches have gotta go, their product is embarrassing, and I don't care about injuries.

That is an accusation that is not present in MY post. I simply noted the immense amount of bellowing from Sooner fans that Arnold would perform better than Gabriel.

Whatever culture is established is lost when BV is fired after 2025. It’s been awhile since OU has been in this position, but Texas fans have lived in it for almost 2 decades. By the end of this year BV will be on the hot seat and recruiting is going to dry up. BV is going to have extreme difficulty attracting a top OC to hitch his wagon to a coach on the hot seat with a dearth of talent available on offense. You’re not getting the QB that can help you out of the portal to commit to BV after how he handled Arnold and Hawkins. 2025 becomes a waste (just like 2024) and OU slips further into lost decade mode. You guys have got to get a new HC in there after THIS season or you’re irrelevant through the end of the 2020s at minimum.

He's got a pretty good record as a DC. Someone would pick him up.

His seat is definitely warm.
If OU continues to not be able to throw passes more than 15 yards into next season, Brent is toast.
