I often wonder if a coach like Osborne would be given 20+ years to finally get that done at one school. Years and years of 1 and 2 loss seasons can be maddening. Bobby Bowden was similar, but not nearly as long. He also got closer than Osborne more often.
Probably not in all honesty.
Even back in those days there was a smaller but very vocal contingent who were fed up he couldn’t beat OU.
After he finally got over the OU hurdle then there was a pretty lengthy period where he couldn’t get past FSU or Miami and the vocal contingent complained loudly he never would.
In today’s 24/7 social media and instant analysis age, he may not have survived the initial unable to get past Switzer and OU stage.

Today, Osborne would probably be fired after year 5
Bowden would've last a little longer but in this era he may have been pushed out for finishing 10+ years in the top 5 and only 1 title (before the '99 title).

I think the Gators and Noles have a better chance due to some of the built in advantages (that I’m jealous of) with weather, proximity to talent, etc. Each just needs the right HC - all the ingredients are there in place for the right guy.

Vince Young, Ricky Williams, and Earl Campbell.
I'm sure the Royal era was badass but I wasn't alive for that one.

It had to be tough on him there at NEB to lose to Miami in '83 on a failed 2pt conversion and not actually win it until over 10 years later in '94.
I guess winning it vs Miami made it even sweeter for him though.

I agree and that's been one of the major problems for both.
Miami too but Miami seems to have their guy now.

1960 until present except for 1997-2006.
I'm not even sure how to rank the moments. I guess the most obvious would be the first one, 78. And ones after long periods without ones like 92 and 2009.
In all I've watched 9 National Championship Alabama teams.

Don't see anything from the Vols yet but the 90s were their last good ole days.
How many SEC titles and national titles would Fulmer have had in the 90s if not for Spurrier and UF.
The only teams to really dominate the Vols in the 90s were Florida and Nebraska.
Oh and Memphis vs Peyton.

Here, as always when you talk about Auburn’s early years, you try to claim a bunch of weird retroactive shite that didn’t happen. The SIAA didn’t have conference champions, and if they did, Auburn still wouldn’t have 8 of them.

1954-1963. Five conference championships in 10 years 47-7-1 SEC record and finished in the top 11 nine of the 10 years. A share of 3 national championships.
