When players become official employees

of college in the next three years, it’s going to change a few things.
- A decent roster will cost around 50 MM.
- A great roster will cost around 75 MM
- a 5 star QB will cost 2-3 MM alone.
- Players will receive full benefits and protection from day 1.
The other impact will be the transfer portal. Essentially colleges can have players sign a “non compete” dictating where they can and cannot transfer to.
In some ways it will suck. In other ways it will straighten out the portal circus. Getting players under contract will bring arbitration into the mix.

Unionize is the next step.

I thought ya'll already had that. What happened?

So what I’m wondering is how this will change the roster slots. Right now it’s 85 scholarship players but you can’t afford to pay 85 guys hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. I’m guessing that a college roster will look a lot like the 50 something man roster in the NFL.

Agree 100%.
This will change roster size. And the concept of “scholarship players” goes out the window.
I see some morons on here already downvoting this thread. This is the topic that y’all should be discussing because it will be a reality in two years.
The other impacts that should be discussed:
- Unions
- Salary Caps
- Roster limits
- Portal restrictions and non competes
The other elephant in the room is the top 32 teams breaking away from the rest.

At that point I will just stop watching college football (not that anyone cares) but the game I grew up loving will be officially dead.

If this does come to pass I don’t know if even the most profitable college football program could pay 50 something guys hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. Pro teams make more money and can carry that many guys on a team so college teams will most definitely need a cap and they still may have to carry a few less players than pro football.

Why? Because they can afford to pay players? Because there aren't 32 programs in the country that even generate a profit.
25 made money in 2019
18 made money in 2022
It's more likely that Congress steps in and establishes boundaries on NIL. If OP is saying that a good team will cost $50 million, I'm assuming he means 4 recruiting cycles. I think it's ridiculous to assume that there's enough teams out there willing to drop $13.5 million per class to have any kind of breakaway division.
If we're looking at wild outcomes, it's more likely that the sport just crumbles or NFL teams start buying college brands and using them as literal farms than some kind of breakaway conference that can drop 8 figures every year on players that can quit without consequence whenever they want.
So, get ready to cheer on the Houston Texans triple A team in College Station.

I feel the same way. Once college fb becomes minor league NFL it'll be time to move on to something else.

Coach Leach had a good idea on how to handle the NIL era.
Give players two options:
1. Free agent city. Negotiate your best deal year to year. After your one year contract is up. Negotiations start again. No opting out of bowl games. Must play every game unless injured. May change teams each year if you want to do so.
2. Sign a traditional scholarship with a team and remain with that team for four years or until graduation. Once you graduate, you receive a lump sum payment of $150,000 or whatever the set amount is. That amount would be the same across the board.
That would alleviate much of the chaos we have today. Yes, you would have a few players playing the market but most would probably opt for the second option.

It already is and you still watch.

What’s the difference between players being 1099 contractors for hire like it is right now & them becoming w-2’s?
At least then they could be signed to multi-year deals instead of having to rerecruit the whole roster every offseason.

You are right of course..I was mostly just referring to losing the college game I grew up with. No playoffs, amateurs playing for new years day bowls. I miss that game.

At that point I think you have some universities that will get out of sports altogether
It’s not their academic mission

You are correct and how could that not be detrimental to the players? They’re kids playing games. Im all for making money but I feel like the NCAA bumblefricked this one so badly that they should be eliminated as a governing institution
Posted on 12/17/23 at 9:35 am to nicholastiger
You're probably right.

It's already the NFL with one year contracts

Well I’m in favor of that but it wouldn’t save the NIL situation, congress already got involved and that ship has sailed.
CFB is in process of going full supernova.
-It’s more expensive than ever to be a fan.
-It’s already basically died on the east and west coasts making it a regional sport
-Rivalries are being killed for TV money
-NIL has removed any illusion of amateurism
-only a few teams can really compete
Let me ask it like this: does anyone in this thread enjoy CFB as much as they did 10 years ago?
I don’t know anyone in my group who does.

100%
But once a player becomes an official employee, they will be locked into a contract like a pro player which prevents them from transferring.
This would clear up the portal issues.

With the portal chaos this year of top QBs leaving 1 and 2 loss teams at great schools it does feel like In a couple years the money involved to retain talent is going to become so large only 15-20 schools will be able to compete. It’s almost better to have kids sign contracts for stability of the teams. Hell players in the NFL have less leeway than some of these top college players. They should get paid for their skills and likeness given the money college fb generates but they need to put some guardrails up or the capital required to field a roster will become insane. It almost already is to a degree.
