so Alabama, in the past, has never had this kind of talent relative to the rest of the country?

The answer is no. Julio, Ingram, Richardson, Lacy, Mcelroy(laugh all you want), McCarron(laugh all you want), Maze, all on the same team. Its not legendary or anything, but that is more talent on one offense than Bama had ever had before.

$1.5 million/yr.

That's great money for a mid-major job and they just hired a new AD who is committed to the football program and plans to build a new on campus stadium. I honestly think McElwain was looking for a solid mid major where he could stay the rest of his career like Peterson. He grew up in the mountains of Montana and at 1.5 mil a year if he can make the Rams a solid 8 to 10 win program in the MWC - Boise, TCU, BYU, Utah and SDSU, he will have a great career there. The MWC is wide open for a new team to dominate it.

I've been told by a good source that McElwain expressed a clear intention of coaching in the BCS title game during his negotiations with Memphis. That doesn't guarantee that he'll coach Alabama through 1/9 as the coach-to-be at Colorado State, but it's reasonable to assume that it's something he wants to do no matter where his destination is.

We'll be more effective in the red zone

Probably.

A concern for LSU for sure.

Damn, just logged on for the first time today and this is what I find...McElwain gone.

I haven't read the thread, but I'm guessing the majority of Bama fans are all saying "good riddance"...right?

Our defense was average with him and without him in 2007. That defense lived and died by how healthy Dorsey was. Dude is mega overrated.

Not really, it's the same handful of guys posting again and again. The vocal minority. McElwain has the support of a high percentage of Bama fans.

I get tired of trying to defend Coach McElwain. Too many idiots.

It actually improves Alabama's chances of winning the game. Everybody likes to blame Foster and McCarron for November 5 but McElwain's idiotic play-calling (especially inside LSU territory) was the primary reason why Alabama lost that game.

Only OC to lead you to averaging 30+ per game 4 yrs straight and that is somehow good news?

Some Bama fans will never be happy. I knew McElwain would be a HC eventually but I hate to see him leave. He did real good things for us and we will miss him.

Allegedly being key word. It wasn't the AD, but to the guy leading the search from the outside, and I doubt seriously it ever happened. If Saban didn't like Mac he could have pushed him out long ago. Saban liked McElwain b/c McElwain does what Saban wants/says. The Memphis rumor was nonsense.
Then why was this not on ESPN?

Too early to tell. Hope he is successful though with his new gig. Did some great things with Bama and grateful for what he brought the last 4 yrs.

This. I would prefer to keep him at UA.
