...on firing Gus?

Im hearing recruiting was terrible but is that all?

Would a more competitive team have saved his job even with the same record?

Some semblance of qb development?

At least 1 win on the road against Ga?

Also, Gus has looked a little resigned over the last few games. Does anyone think word may have gotten to him that the end was near?

Hey, congrats to Auburn. They managed to get him fired and beat State at the same time. Better than we did.

I think some of this was true. There was a half-hearted attempt at selling the idea that Auburn was going to be great very soon (next year -- possibly in 2022) but no one bought it. Axe time. Auburn was smart to do this. Trust me, I would love to have Gus stay there forever because you know who he is. The best OK coach in the country.

If they don't lose to the worst South Carolina team since Lou Holtz first year Gus probably survives. That loss killed him

Long time coming, 3 double digit losses this year and a loss to fired boom. Not complicated.

I heard Nick’s been in negotiations for awhile with Auburn. The Covid scare got him thinking that there’s more to life than winning football games so he might as well go somewhere where he won’t.

Against Big Six teams on the road, he was 1-14.

You’re winning nothing unless you can win some big road games.

That and the Arkansas loss, imo. They lost to a frickin first year coach who took over a team who hadn't won a conference game in two years.

Guarantee you that loss turned some of their admins firmly against him. The South Carolina loss was icing on the cake.

This firing is another reason that CFB has diminished in importance to me. All Gus did was win. 67-33 record. Had more success against Saban than any other coach over the last eight years. He is fired.

Hard to understand plus they are now paying him $21 million NOT TO COACH AT AUBURN ANYMORE. Just let that sink in.

What coach wants to go into that kind of insanity?

why wait is my question? It was inevitable. I really thought his buyout would mean it would be after next season. I am shocked the money stepped up at this present time.

Had nothing to due with recruiting or the loss against UGA or Bama. This started after the Bowl Game, the PTB realized that Gus would not take them over the hump.

That looks good on paper. What you are ignoring is...........Gus was 1 and whatever it was against LSU, UGA, and bama on the road. That doesn't cut it at Auburn.

He failed to put together back to back 9 win seasons in 8 freaking years.
His recruiting took a huge hit in his 8th yr.
He had a horrible record in big away games after 8 yrs.
He refused to evolve his offense after running through 3 OC’s including himself as OC.
He had the nerve to make a public statement about a four loss season was “solid.”
He brought apathy to his own fan base.

This started in 2015, and he has treaded water ever since. Gus is a great guy who ran a clean program. That was his biggest downfall.

All of the above plus he had a pretty bad record in bowl games.

Recruiting hasnt been a problem rankings wise in his tenure. Recruiting on the OL has been terrible and his inability to develop a QB hurt. Ultimately you look at 2014 and 2018 and this year as the years that crushed him.

2014- Return Nick Marshall and one of the most talented teams in AU history and lose 5 games even when ranked as high as #3 in November.

2018- Return Stidham and a lot off of a team that was one win away from going to the playoffs and lose 5 games.

2020- return SEC fresh of the year and solid firepower off a team and go 6-4.

He also couldnt win big games on the road and lost multiple bowl games against teams he shouldnt lost too. Optics matter as well. Gus goes 11-3 in 2017 agsinst crazy schedule and beats UCF and then goes 10-3 last year with true fresh QB against crazy schedule and beats Minnesota he is still the coach IMO
