re: What is the greatest Southern United States river?

This is one of my favorite books ever.

The White River

I think the Mississippi is the most important river to our entire country, but I’d like to mention two that haven’t been mentioned here. Both in Florida:

St. John’s River: largest river in the US that flows north.

Santa Fe River: some of the most beautiful cold springs that not many people know of outside of Florida.

Not that familiar w/ a lot of those mentioned, … I saw Deliverance when it came out.

New River for the fishing and scenery.

Atchafalaya River & Basin for scenic beauty, fishing, and proximity to the Cajun food in Lafayette, Breaux Bridge, Henderson, Abbeville, etc.

Mississippi River for the Music. The Miss at flood stage is awesome to see, especially if you live in Texas.

Not sure where the Southern US starts, but …

The New River and Gauley River in West Virginia are awesome, World Class White Water rafting, New River Gorge.

The Rivers in Texas that skirt the Hill Country are very small, you can walk across most of them. But the pure, drinkable 68 degree spring water is different than any place I’ve been. My avatar is mine.

I’ve heard the Ozarks around Fayetteville are similar. Anything similar close to the college towns?

Savannah River

Bayou Bartholomew.

Spring river

If not for the TVA dam system. The Tenn river, in and around Muscle Shoals, Al would be the whitewater capital of the world

And electricity would be thirty years later coming to parts of the south. Not to mention navigability of the river.

Ouachita is one of the best. Starts above Hot Springs, AR and flows through a shite ton of beer drinking between there and Jonesville, LA where it empties into the Black River before heading on into the Mississippi
